Steve Albini

The man, the myth, Steve Albini. If you don't know who he is, take a moment to observe this list:

The Pixies
The Breeders
Tad
Helmet
Silkworm
Nirvana
PJ Harvey
Dazzling Killmen
Superchunk
Gastr Del Sol
Melt Banana
Guided By Voices
Pansy Division
The Ex
Jimmy Page & Robert Plant
Nine Inch Nails
Low
Flogging Molly
Mogwai
Neurosis
Godspeed You Black Emperor!
F-Minus
Leftover Crack
Gogol Bordello
Slint

Those are just some of the bands that I know of unlike the Auteurs of whom I have never heard for whom Steve Albini has been sound engineer. The man is a legend. He has left his unique sonic style on many great records, including In Utero, Surfer Rose, and Tweez.

Aside from being one of the most incredible audio engineers on the planet, he has been in several really great bands, including Big Black, Rapeman, and Shellac.

What do you guys think? A god? Overrated? Who cares?

here's a bigger list - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...rding_projects

he of course has only done an album or 2 from your list.

I respect him most for charging a band to produce them more if he doesn't like them... :)

Saw Shellac at ATP 2 years ago too - good times! :)

You missed out The Auteurs , one of the best British bands of the 90s :(

Good guitarist but he is a bit of a chump. Big Black stands as his shining achievement.

One of my heros.

indie...are we talking about the same indie,,,the music that has a mellow yellow warm indian reggae feel?

Sweet Jane 04-19-2006 02:56 AM

Not overrated at all, he's damn fine at what he does.

Did he really do all those from your list CA?

cardboard adolescent 04-19-2006 04:23 AM

Indeed he did, according to allmusic... and allmusic never lies...

Tweez sucked. Spiderland RULED!

But anyway, Steve Albini is the biggest ****ing nerd on the planet. I'm serious, search YouTube for live Big Black, there's the funniest video of them playing live. He's amazingly scrawny, yet filled with RAGE! He'd probably be able to kick anyones ass he wanted to by screaming at them. I love him.

They were both great. Spiderland is so great it makes Tweez look bad in comparison, but if you actually listen to it it's still a great album. It's like a funky version of Big Black. Most of the criticisms I've heard of it are pretty unfounded and show that the person should go back and listen to it again.

puddin 04-20-2006 01:24 AM

Tweez has some good SONGS on it, but they just sound bad. Take Rhoda for instance, it's an amazing song on the Slint EP, but on Tweez it just sounds flat and boring.
The guitars sound amazingly shoddy too.
Darlene is the only song I really like listening to on Tweez.

BUMP

Steve's amazing. Respect to no damn end. Everything I've heard with his name on I love.

hiu 08-21-2006 09:30 PM

The guy is a cockface. Most of his music was good though.

Sneer 08-27-2007 01:58 PM

I've been listening to big black and shellac a lot recently. i particularly love shellac, they just do it for me on so many levels. production wise i havent given him much attention.
