Does anyone else think their drummer sounds like a drum machine (in a good way)?

Yes.

I suspect there was extensive use of looping anyway, on at least a couple of the songs on Boxer.

I wouldn't even blame your attention span, I've listened to Boxer several times and while I enjoy it I honestly can't pick songs/choruses out the way I can with Alligator.

Anyway the National's drummer is one of the best I've ever heard. The dude's a wizard and very tasteful, it's obvious he adds something with his drumming but it's never out of place or seems like showing off.

His drumming was pretty much the highlight of Boxer for me...:\ Well that and the moment when the trumpets kick in on Fake empire...

Definitely, I haven't gotten that hot over Horns since The National Anthem.

Life In A Glass House? Gotta love the Clarinet line. Yah, Alligator is more accessible in the sense that there's more going on, but I like the sound of Boxer more, I think it complements the vocals perfectly.

their whole sound is mostly based on the drumming.it's very weird that they sound so great when they actually play simple pieces

Yah, they have a great drummer. Their sound is very layered, especially on Boxer, it's hard to make out individual instruments sometimes.

The National is one of the best bands around right now. I finally got into "Alligator" and realized its greatness after listening to "Boxer".
