It depends if you want the the technical definition or the more er.. conceptual definition.
Technically, as other other's have stated indie is just short for independent, as in the artist is on an independent record label as opposed to a mainstream one. But indie has evolved from that, even though people still like to argue that you can't call indie a genre because it isn't. But as more people start categorizing a certain type of music as "indie" it is inevitible that it will become a genre. It's still pretty hazy as to what you can call "indie," but if I had to I would say it's a soft alternative, a little less edge, for the most part. But to really get a good idea of what people are considering indie, you can just look around the internet and see what people are calling indie. Obviously everyone will have their own opinion, but you can get a general idea. |
