It's weird, I love "Indie" music and I wish it was mainstream so that most people I meet I could actually have a decent discussion about music with, rather than them telling me their favorite band is "The Weekend" or "Kesha"

The fact that Ed Sheeran got popular makes me happy, as long as he doesn't change his sound too much. The problem is that once most "Indie" bands go mainstream they change their sound--I'm looking at you, Kings of Leon--So they are no longer Indie. However if an "Indie" band switches to a new label and maintains their sound, I still refer to it as Indie music.

I feel like you're a little misinformed as to what constitutes as "indie".

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.

Isn't it just having an independent label? I get that, but to me it also describes a certain alternative/experimental sound.

Yeah so not sure where Ed Sheeran fits into it all. He's always just been a pop musician.

I guess. His early stuff is more acoustic/rapping which to me is pretty alternative, but yeah he's probably always had a big label since he started out writing songs for other artists.

But it was still done from a pop standpoint. When I think of indie, I usually think of the underground scene or college radio. Anything DIY, that kind of disregards major musical trends and couldn't bother whether they make a quick buck or not. It's music for music's sake. Ed's music is different from this in that he sprang up during a time when folk pop like Mumford and Sons was on alternative radio 24/7. Just because he adds some Wiz Khalifa influence to the sound it doesn't make him experimental. His music was made for the studio.

I think you're thinking of The Lumineers, not indie.

I came in here to talk about music that hasn't been poisoned by the cancer that is corporate pop. How did Ed Sheeran pop up?
