These education threads can always use updating, but I'd still prefer if I were asked before any revisions. Also, not that it matters, but I did contribute quite a bit of my own writing to the emo education thread - I noticed I am not listed as a co-author anymore...

When I'd said that you hadn't been on msn for like six months so consulting you wasn't really an option srry dude.

I finally got around to reading this and I don't think there is any chance in all hell that I would boil Nick Cave and the Bad seeds down to indie folk/singersongwriter.
He is a singer and a song writer....but so are ten million other mother****ers who aren't called singersongwriters.

Sorry to bring up something old, but that term just makes me think of men with bad goatees wearing sweaters, playing atrociously saccharine earnest love songs on the acoustic guitar in your local cafe.

I could be wrong... but I'm a little offended that I didn't see Fugazi mentioned once in the definition of indie. I thought Fugazi [I]was[I] the definition of indie.

P.S.-Indie heads should check out Bone Gunn, they're trying to do everything all on their own and they deserve every ounce of recognition they can get.

THANK YOU! I was reading through this - great history and genre definitions by the way, I'll be using this - but was very disappointed that, until the last post, I didn't even see anyone talk about Fugazi. They were definitely major in the creation of indie. Ian McKaye's whole DIY philosophy is a key factor in what makes a real indie band (although the punk community was also very DIY).

From what I've heard, I really love shoegaze and was wondering what other bands are like Chapterhouse, the Boo Radleys, and Lush.

The most interesting thing would be to see how the bands themselves would characterize their own music. I tend to agree with the notions above and the descriptions are very specific. There are just so many that could jump sub-genres....I suppose this is the beauty of independence...
