I think those lyrics are great compared to some of the crap some people have out right now. Seriously, I didn't even look at Eminem's new music video but it's called "Ass Like That". I bet it's like stonedpath's hip-hop lyrics in the song writing forum. That passage you posted is metaphorical. I don't think Conor Oberst would just write meaningless lyrics into his heartfelt songs. I mean come on buddy, if Pitchfork is praising him then it's definitely not for his piano work, I can tell you that much. What I got out of that passage was.. I knew a beautiful girl, with too much confidence, and every man wanted her, and so did I. But she died because all she ever saw were looks and she didn't think she looked good enough. Men with dark souls carry flamboyant weapons to hurt others and become known. They will kill a man for no reason, only to gain fear and respect from others. I don't care if the men want to kill me or not. Now I'd be interested to finish this story but you were too afraid to post the whole song or something. I'm not even that into Bright Eyes, but I can tell you have bad taste in music if you can't enjoy deciphering a metaphor. 47 year old men? |
47 year old men pretending to be females under the age of 18 online....
i like bright eyes.. im fifteen.
i bet youre a dirty old man in real life....
Well, I love Bright Eyes. Beautiful lyrics, meaningful and melancholic, I like that. Although I'm afraid that Connor Oberst will commit suicide soon...
^ ohhh, i hope not. i <3 him. and yeah Bright Eyes are awesome. and yeah, me....15.
I like his lyrics. The voice in some ways. The actual SOUND of it all is just nonsense.
But what do I know? |
Everything. You are God after all.

i like bright eyes and i agree that it is easy listening.I find it so refreshing in a way. i like the simplicity of songs like lua where some of the lines are so simple.I really like it! and don't be mad if the majority just happen to be female. there's nothing wrong with that. just like there's nothing wrong about how the only slipknot fans i know are guys under 20
I don't know much of Bright Eyes' music....but what I have listened to..I liked. I heard the new cd is catchy...What p i s s e s me off is how people are on this constant urge complain about labeling....when in fact.....you do the same thing.....shut up, quit whining.....and f u c k i n g sing.
alright well im 22 and I like bright eyes, and I'd say he's most like Bob Dylan. Not just because he's political, which I think people are mislabeling, becuase its not always political, but half the time just social commentary, but also because he isn't afraid to do songs like "When the president talks to god" and he writes rather well. Listen I hate to break it to you, but I've seen the lyrics forum here, and you could learn a hell of alot from Oberst. Read some poetry sometime and watch similarities. He doens't need to rhyme, he uses unique descriptions instead of rehasing the same cliches that make the imagine lay dead instead of jump off the page. And he probably got more Dylan comparisons when he did Digital Ash in a digital urn because, for him, it was pretty ballsy. Not to mention that he's been with the label he on since 13. Hes about the music.
You know, you guys should really listen to Bright Eyes before you label him/them. The two new cds aren't that great, but if you want to hear Bright Eyes at his/their best, then listen to "Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh" and "From a Balance Beam".
Ok, I agree, he's not Bob Dylan. Both are very talented, but they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Still though, Bright Eyes is one of my favourite musicians. Just listen to his lyrics and stuff, because the lyrics and stuff are pretty amazing, and make me feel a lot better. |
Whoever said Bright Eyes was a joke, you do not know anything about music
Okay "All Night Dinah", let me tell you a few things about music:
You are correct in saying Conor Oberst cannot compare to B Dyl. Bobby is the leader when it comes to lyrics. No one I have heard yet, with the exception of perhaps Brand New, can come close to Bob Dylan for lyrics. Brand New has a completely different style of lyrics, but just the same, there is a lot behind them. Many think Bob Dylan was a bad singer, but they are ever so wrong. Bob sings with a passion that so many vocalists have not touched since. So when you praise Bob Dylan, I agree. That does not mean, however, that I agree with you about your disgraceful comments towards Conor. He is a musical genious. If you don't believe me, listen to the musical variations between "Take It Easy (Love Nothing)" and "Lua". I have all the Bright Eyes' cds and singles. I think he is really going somewhere if he hasn't already gotten there. Until I see "All Night Dinah" belting out some of the better mod-rock tunes these days, or topping most charts; keep your hateful comments to yourself. This kid can rock. Listen to "It's Cool, We Can Still Be Friends" then get back to me. Somethingisrunningonempty |

Bright Eyes has AMAZING lyrics. Listen to "Lover I dont have to Love". GREAT song.
i like bright eyes. say what you will but connor oberst is a great lyricist. too many people judge him on image but if you listen to the music its actually very relevant and heartfelt.
eh bright eyes isnt as good as his desaparecidos, plus the guy really doesnt take himself that seriously you know. have you ever heard any of his interviews?
Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes)
Alright, so I think that Conor Oberst is an amazing writer and a good musician too, What do you think?
I agree with you. Totally. I love him, even though, he did slag off John Peel at this years Glasto...not a good idea. Lots of people consider him emo. but whatever. I like him, doesn't bother me what genre he is. mm hmm. I'm making no sense. but long into short, Bright Eyes is great.
I think he`s a twat & at Glastonbury he confirmed it
Yeah, okay, HE may be a twat, but his music is great. but thats my opinion.
His music isn`t that special , there`s loads of bands doing that kind of stuff
meh, i like it. I haven't heard a great deal like it.
Mm, I'll have to agree that he's a twat. In fact, Bright Eyes is probably one of the worst bands on Saddlecreek, the irony of it all.
I've always liked Bright Eyes, I like that overindulgent stuff sometimes. Though some of his albums were filled with fluff, I can't fault the lyrics of Lua, most of 'Lifted' and the ying/yang styles of his latest two albums, particularly the electronic one.
I think he will write a masterpiece one day. But not yet. |
I <3 Bright eyes.
Meh, I think Bright Eyes are more Emo than Indie.
^ I said that, when i first posted in this thread...mhm...
Yes but noobs never read the first posts in a thread.

What?
Ok I'll be honest. I didn't understand the last several posts. But anyway, most of your popular magazines try to really push Bright Eyes as emo, but the genre itself is disputable, even among the bandmembers. Since Saddlecreek is an established independent label, this forum is a perfect fit for this thread. Also, I'm not sure on this, but I could swear that this thread originated in this forum; it was not moved here. |
I love musicbanter, its the greatest.
I agree with Misfits, I too love Bright Eyes.
Well, what shud I say...of course I love Bright Eyes which includes Conor Oberst for sure. He's a very sensitive songwriter and I like the "Easy/Lucky/Free" video.
But I'm afraid he's going to commit suicide some fine day... |
