Bright Eyes...What a joke

So I've read about 4 articles about Bright eyes in the past 2 weeks(including one in the new yorker whats with that?) And about half of those have compared Conner Oberst to...Bob Dylan?!?! Conner Oberst is nothing more than a trendy emo singer. How the hell does anybody think he is a reosanable comparison to Bob Dylan? Blenders reasoning was that musicly hes remeniscent of Dylan....thats crap In dylans later years he didnt even play on a diatonic scale how is it possible that bright eyes could sound like him? I especially dont get why The New Yorker a magazine of much prestige would call him a folk musician when he obviously has no relations to folk music at all. Conner Oberst is one cat that really know how to get me steamed. Some things I will never understand.....

My ex girlfriend loves Bright Eyes & was always trying to get me to listen to them.

I told her that when she could find one fan of theirs that wasn`t either female or under 18 I would.

Needless to say she never found one.

Oh yeah, I read that in the music section of the New York Times. Why are you mad at him though? He's just making music. Its not like he told the reporters that he's emo. He's just a victim of writers that know nothing about music. This also happened to the Promise Ring, Cap'n JAzz, The Get Up Kids, etc... They never said they were emo they are just named that by uneducated writers.

I'm not saying I agree with them (the writers) but I think they figure since some of his songs are politically motivated then he's automatically like Bob Dylan. It's a bunch of crap, but hey, most people don't try to think about it they just agree with it because it's in some magazine.

I agree with you, I never said he was the one who gave himself this title. Its just pathetic how poor music journalism has gotten. You would think the Newyorker of all magazines would be able to find a better represntation of our generations Dylan than f-n bright eyes. Its just kind of pathetic what lots of music journalism will publish today. Rolling stone has turned into a magazine with a political core, new yorkers music section is shotty at best when it comes to anything outside jazz or the like, blender is obsessed with the T and a and not the music. Spin has been doing a pretty good job though. I think there one of my favorite music mags out there. Or he handful of cool punk zines i.e. Profane Existence, slug and lettuce, suburban blight. Magazines written by people who know and love the music and bands.

but I do blame Conner Oberst for having such a bad band.
