whoa, old thread.

I would also recomend Blur, Smashing Pumpkins, Operation Ivy, Motion City Soundtrack, and the Pixies.

sick, someone mentioned Op Ivy. Listen to Noise for Pretend, Wolf Parade, Rilo Kiley, The Decemberists, The Long Winters, The Blood Brothers, Refused, The International Noise Conspiracy, and of course Neutral Milk Hotel.

death cab for cutie is a great band to train your ear to the "sound" of indie rock, you'll probably appreciate more obscure sounding bands after you've listened to Deathcab

i fixed it for you.

and just in case you or anybody else didn't guess, my above post was my dumb idea of a joke, since death cab for cutie is more popular than herpes now.

Pavement is way better. I sense your defending your indie pride, do you really care that more than just the people you know listen to them? Their new stuff is a little weak but I felt someone asking about something so obscure and eclectic as indie would proably appreaciate a more mainstream band to get into it. It would be a better convincer that indie music is really good. Besides most indie bands dont sound like Pavement anymore (im listening to brighten the corners now).

i was only havin' fun. if i was into the indie snob junk, i'm sure i'd listen to much more obscure music, but the fact is i don't like most of the more obscure indie bands i've heard, which makes me glad they're obscure.

i just found pavement, personally, to be a better fit for the statement you made. sure, they have their unique style that is rarely or ever replicated, but in their approach to music, i would say it's very "indie". i wouldn't say the same about death cab for cutie, at least not based on their latest cd, which is what the majority of people will think of or download when they hear the name. i don't find the approach "indie" and it rarely "rocks", so i wouldn't call it a good ear-trainer for "indie rock". i just see it as listenable, melodic pop.

and i was just listening to brighten the corners earlier today. groovy, no?
