So I guess there's gonna be a new album this year, summer maybe? They are touring again but of course not coming here :(.

The album is gonna be called Mama I'm Swollen.

Laces Out Dan! 01-19-2009 11:21 PM

Ill definitely be checkin it out.

simplephysics 02-10-2009 04:26 PM

Silly bump for the album art and track listings. They're back down to a four piece with this one, so I'm hoping for something like Domestica. March 10th, but I expect a leak is coming soon.

simplephysics 02-10-2009 07:43 PM

No problem, a Cursive fan is a friend indeed.

Laces Out Dan! 02-10-2009 07:44 PM

Appreciated.

elvi 02-11-2009 06:33 AM

I do love cursive, although I used to love them more. i prefer their more recent stuff to their old old stuff. i saw them live in a really small venue and it was amazing. i met tim kasher afterwards and he was a v nice guy as well, which always makes a difference for me

simplephysics 02-11-2009 06:41 AM

You hear that Ethan?
HE'S A NICE GUY.

Farfisa 02-11-2009 09:32 PM

Has the new album leaked yet?

simplephysics 02-11-2009 09:35 PM

Nah, not yet. I've requested it though so here's hoping..

I do, I do. PM please.

sidewinder 04-17-2009 02:47 PM

Got the new CD in the mail yesterday, playing for the first time now. So far I'm liking that it's not as much of an aural assault as Happy Hollow. That album never let up, made my ears bleed. Plus it was 5 or so minutes longer than their other albums, and felt like 15.

swim 04-17-2009 03:35 PM

I wish they weren't touring with Man Man because Man Man is way better but Cursive is more popular.

sidewinder 04-17-2009 05:11 PM

I am impressed after my first listen of Mama, I'm Swollen. Much more varied than Happy Hollow.

Mordecai 05-26-2009 06:55 AM

I bought Mama, I'm Swollen and I am now an avid fan!

but where do I go next from Mama?

simplephysics 05-26-2009 07:57 AM

Get The Ugly Organ, it's much better than anything else they've done. Domestica too.

Barabajagal 05-26-2009 09:38 AM

The Ugly Organ is a masterpiece in my eyes. While some tracks are definitely stronger than others, it works well as an album that lulls and crescendos with definite purpose. "Driftwood: A Fairy Tale" and "The Recluse" are amazing.

Unfortunately I can't get into other Cursive, save for a few random tracks. I bought Domestica after The Ugly Organ and was really disappointed. I think it's Kasher style of singing - the abrasiveness can work really well (like in "A Gentleman Caller") but other times it becomes....not musical to me. And I really can't stomach their live videos, the vocals are scary bad.

The Ugly Organ is in my top twenty though.

sidewinder 05-26-2009 11:47 AM

The Ugly Organ and Domestica are definitely their best, IMO. The early stuff, oh man...the vocals are just terrible for the most part. Totally cringe-worthy.

Regarding the new album...I enjoyed it on first listen (post above), but then my second listen wasn't as enjoyable (possibly due to inferior headphones) and I haven't had the urge to go back to it since...other stuff keeps taking priority. How does everyone feel about it?

simplephysics 05-26-2009 11:59 AM

Cursive are always trying to change their sound, and by those terms Mama, I'm Swollen is a pretty standard Cursive album. I'm not exactly blown away, but it is a step up from Happy Hallow.

I wrote a review for Mama, I'm Swollen for a local paper. I really enjoy the record and feel Cursive has expanded their sound to acoustic guitars (caveman) and other things we might not normally hear. Songs like In the Now or Donkeys (a personal favorite) never get old.

FaSho 06-30-2009 09:00 PM

I really like The Ugly Organ, other then "A Gentleman Caller", but havem't really heard anything else by them. That albums good, but not anything I haven't heard before.

Haha. A Gentleman Caller is one of my favorites from that record. Staying Alive is Great too. Its just overall good

sidewinder 07-08-2009 01:15 PM

I'm finally getting around to a third listen of Mama, I'm Swollen and it's still not doing much for me. I think I enjoyed it most the first time. The second time I didn't like it at all, and the third time it's just meh. :( There is decent stuff but just leaves me feeling empty and unsatisfied.

Spidersaretoads 07-08-2009 01:24 PM

They lost me at The Ugly Organ

You mean after The Ugly Organ, right?

Right?

Spidersaretoads 07-08-2009 08:27 PM

Yes, after...I should have said after...even though that's still my least favourite of the first four records...

Alfred 07-08-2009 09:03 PM

I've only heard The Ugly Organ (courtesy of dreadnaught) and I loved it. Especially the last track, Staying Alive. What an amazing song.

Where next?

For sure, but don't go in thinking it's going to sound like The Ugly Organ.. it's much more stripped down, pretty sure they were a four piece back then.. and Tim loves him concept albums way too much to keep Cursive's sound consistent. You might like the Burst & Bloom EP too, it doesn't really touch The Ugly Organ or Domestica but it's still pretty good.

FaSho 07-09-2009 09:39 AM

Mama, I'm Swollen isn't too bad. Just a lot more...alternative then their other work. I actually really like From The Hips and Mama, I'm Satan.

million dollar basher 07-09-2009 02:38 PM

Good stuff....

I saw this thread and had to reply. Despite his pervasive bleakness (or maybe because of it) I love Tim Casher and Cursive. "Ugly Organ" was a groundbreaking album, and I feel like Casher's indie spin on the (for lack of a better word) emo genre was probably the greatest interpretation of it, thus far. Kudos to Cursive!

No man, kudos to you. :thumb:

dailybeatz 07-29-2009 10:17 AM

i love from the hips and mama im satan. i definitely need to check out their back catalogue though. i hear its way more experimental, and i like experimental

Eggman 08-10-2010 09:51 AM

Pretty big bump...but oh well. Cursive is my favorite band at the moment (one of my favorites of all time), so I felt the need to post in their thread.

I would say my three favorite Cursive releases are Ugly Organ, Burst and Bloom EP, and Domestica. The pre-Domestica stuff is great, and so is Mama, I'm Swollen. Happy Hollow....ehh. I can do without.

Such a great live band. INCREDIBLE. I saw them recently for the third time at the Concert for Equality, and Tim completely blew me away. Such an incredible performance with a near-perfect setlist. So amazing.

Ugly Organ definitely ranks at the top for me. Probably my favorite album of all time.

I saw them on tour for The Ugly Organ, they were indeed great. For me it's that album or Domestica. I was pretty disappointed in Mama, I'm Swollen really. The first time I played it, I thought it was good, but I was disappointed more with each listen. I liked Happy Hollow better, even though it felt too long. Some pre-Domestica stuff is good, musically, but the vocals were too cringe-inducing.

Eggman 08-10-2010 12:31 PM

When I last saw them, they played the two opening songs from Domestica, all of Ugly Organ except for two songs, and one song from Happy Hollow. I couldn't have ever reasonably wished for a better setlist.

Kroopa 08-10-2010 06:32 PM

Huge fan of cursive and missed my chance to see them when they were last in LA. I was so pissed.
