The way I see it, indie is different depending on how 'hard-core' the band or fan is. An indie (independent) band is a band that's not signed to record label (by choice, not because they suck ha ha) Also, they don't usually buy into the whole rock and roll 'lifestyle' because they're against commercialism and capitalism and don't want to contribute to their growth by promoting and selling cds to people who don't necessarily 'get' their music.
Hmmm that's the best I could do not being too into indie myself...hope it helps. P.S if I'm wrong someone correct me |

Hmm...sounds pretty good to me. I'm not in the mood for explaining everything on the subject right now (i should write a word document and just copy and paste it) But that sounds good, most of the stuff on this forum are concerened with Indie Rock, but there can be Indie *insert music type here* for just about anything.

I agree with Kathryn. Indies are musicians, singers, and/or bands that are unsigned, that is the core definition...whether by choice or circumstance. Some are dedicated Independents for those reasons mentioned. Actually, Independents can also be a film or production company that works outside of any of the "Big Name - Big Budget" Hollywood/ Studio system. There are plenty of Independent Music Studios as well. So Independents could also be called Do-It-Yourselfers, and many do perfectly well, without the big label backing.

Yea i dont really think that onlt DIYers are indie I mean I think that Indie means that they are independent in the music they make and dont change it just to fit mainstream they make music because they want to play for devoted fans not to make bundles of money I think most indie musicians are actually afraid of fame in my mind the epitemy of Indie has got to be Guster these guys are unconvential made it slightly popular with their single Amsterdam then dissapeared because they dont want fame..not to mention their tunes are killer

Indie is slang for a type of guitar orientated music derived from 'punk'. Indie has generated it's own fashions as with most youth music. Originally an abb. of Independent, being a record label not affiliated to a major label such as Sony or EMI.
i dont know if i agree with that ah well |
