thanks for the link. I'v said before, "indie" music has never been a favorite, but it's growing. I'll definitly check out some artist, even though it seems like half are aspiring "rappers"

no problem... there is some really good bands/ artists on Garage Band.

my personal fave as i'm sure you can tell is Cold Driven. if your into hard rock, give them a listen.

now they are indie, they are totally unsigned and did their cd in the studio themselves and it's incredible... they are starting to get some attention now, and there have been some offers, some they scoffed at, and a few that have their attention, and i'm sure when they do get signed, they will be happy to leave the "indie" title behind.

I agree with Expletive.
Indie isnt a genre of music.
You can be a Rock band.......but also be signed to an Indie label. Or, be unsigned
You can be a Pop band.......but also be signed to an Indie label.Or be unsigned
Once you are signed to a major label.....you can no longer be considered an Indie band.
It makes no sense to call a band on a major label "indie"
Once the Indie Pop band is signed to a major label, they are simply "Pop"....not Indie.
That is something that gets on my nerves.
An "indie" band, on a major label....is nonexistent

well, i totally agree with both of you!

but there were a few earlier posts that suggested indie was a "sound" or genre of music...

so it's rather moot to argue it, isn't it?

Sorry but no... examples on off my head are Rilo Kiley and Idiot Pilot... both indie, but signed to major labels... Major labels sign a lot of small bands with small contracts and the music a lot of these bands make is most certainly 'indie'

'Indie' is not a term to be taken literallly... it's just a catch all term to describe 'alternative' or 'non-top 40 pop' etc...

Default you got indie in my peanut butter

Now that labels are specifically looking for bands to sign that can seem "indie" or sound "indie" and bring street cred to the label the term doesn't seem to have all that much importance . . . its just another term, useful I guess if you are trying to avoid the usualk pop bands. Or useful for tagging your Mp3s. There are so many genres now I've almost given up even trying to pigeonhole sounds. Now if you are looking just for truly independent and small label bands then that is a whole different deal

But, that said here's a few i like lately that are a little different

earlimart (if you like grandady)
laketrout
leaving carmichael (sp?)
antony and the johnsons
the hold steady
dirtbombs
