Could anymore give me a description on the genre Indie...and also maybe some More mainstream indie bands that i may have heard of

puddin 11-08-2005 02:27 AM

Isaac Brocks or however you spell his last name, from Modest Mouse OR Steven Malkmus OR Frank Black.

IndiElectronica 11-08-2005 04:08 AM

Isaac Brocks? who that?

Oh.. need to add Mark E. Smith (Fall), Ian Ian McCulloch (Echo & the bunnymen), Robert Smith (Cure).

some others to consider are Ian Curtis, kurt cobain...

<<<>>> 11-08-2005 02:46 PM

isaac brocks from modest mouse

IndiElectronica 11-08-2005 04:25 PM

OH!!!

(i should have known that...)

Modest Mouse is a weird one for me... i'm originally from seattle but never 'got into them'. I remember a girl I fancied liked a guy who was a huge fan so I immediately hated them... lol.

finally got into them in their last album - realiazed what i was missing and have since got all their albums and seen them 3 times. GREAT BAND!

Any band releasing music on an independent label. Indie itself isn't a genre, but there are genres like [General] Indie Rock, Indie Pop, etc.

dirt mcgirt 11-08-2005 06:09 PM

Bands that work for independent labels? :usehead:

Its not as much of a genre as it is a term for non mainstream bands, its basicly todays alternative rock, and like alternative rock bands in the 80s and 90s, most indie bands have little in common. Im very disapointed in todays independent scene, at least most american and canadian indie bands, its a lot better in europe though, post rock has taken a life of its own, and so far a lot of damn good bands have come out of it. Post rock in my opinion is basicly a style of modern progressive rock. The modern prog scene is the "true" indie rock scene if you ask me. ;)

The best Post-Rock bands are from Canada. And the US has a lot of great indie bands, but I guess you wouldn't think that if all you like is Post-Rock.

IndiElectronica 11-09-2005 10:13 AM

was gonna argue but you are prolly right... plenty of other great ones tho is all I'll add... Expl in the sky, Mogwai, Sigur Rós etc.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! and all it's off-shoots is what gives Canada the edge I think...

When Modest Mouse is considered to be the best american indie band, we have a problem.

Unless you're a fan of Spin and NME, they're not.

Spoon. I'd pick Sonic Youth if they weren't signed to Geffen.

Alright, a few more good ones...

The Decemberists
Explosions In the Sky
Les Savy Fav
The Mountain Goats
Wilco
Xiu Xiu

And solo artists...

Andrew Bird
Sufjan Stevens
Rufus Wainwright

puddin 11-10-2005 03:55 AM

Les Savy Fav are f*cking awesome. F*CKING AWESOME!!!!

Best new indie band would probably be Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.

And I'm changing my favourite indie singer to Jeff Mangum from Neutral Milk Hotel, no one can touch that guy.

Spikey 11-10-2005 09:48 AM

I voted for other Is he a good singer? * joke:)

cardboard adolescent 11-12-2005 07:36 PM

Bob Mould is the man, though I haven't been keeping up with him recently... something about electronica or something... you should probably put Grant Hart up there too. J. Mascis' voice can go completely to **** sometimes and other times it's absolutely orgasmic- either way I love it. But Bob Mould can still sing better. I would add Thurston Moore and Stephen Malkmus to the list too.

And Europe has

Radiohead
Muse
Doves
Sigur Ros
Bjork
Flower Kings
Travis
Skin

Europe > North America

Just like in the 60s and 70s. ;)

Radiohead, Sigur Ros, and Bjork are amazing, yes. But Muse, Doves, and Travis, are only decent. I haven't heard of Flower Kings or Skin, so I can't comment. Not to mention the fact that, if I'm not mistaken, all are signed to major labels (plus Radiohead and Bjork aren't new).

Right now North America is kicking the **** out of Europe musically, you can hardly even compare the two. Take the best band Europe has put out recently, and compare it to the best band North America has, and North America would win.

It was the same way in the 60s, with bands like The Velvet Underground and The Stooges breaking barriers, and setting the stage for punk music (among other things). In the 70s we had the best punk bands, Proto-Punk, No Wave, etc. The only thing Europe has ALWAYS beaten North America in is pop music.

Then compare VU and The Stooges to The Who, The Kinks and uh The Beatles, the best american artists in the 60s were The Doors, The Beach Boys and The Grateful Dead, but compare them to The Jimi Hendrix Experience(hendrix was a born american, but he was a british act), The Rolling Stones, Cream, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Lets not forget that many of rocks well known genres began in the UK, the blues rock boom of the 60s, and heavy metal and prog in the 70s, as well as all the great british punk acts like the clash and the sex pistols.

Anyway, those artists started out indie didnt they?, im sorry, i broke my own rules. :(

I dont know too much about indie rock, im here to learn. :)

England still pwns America IMHO.

It's useless to argue this, because no matter how many great American bands I throw at you, you'll throw back some great British bands, and vice versa. Let's just agree to disagree.

puddin 11-13-2005 04:37 AM

For indie rock (whatever that may be), America kicks the **** outta everywhere. I mean, I can't even name ONE indie rock band from England.

*shakes hand*

puddin 11-13-2005 05:17 PM

No, it's because England smells.

reefermonkey 11-17-2005 07:48 AM

I can't believe no-one's said Morrisey, possibly the greatest lyricist our fair isle has ever produced?

puddin 11-18-2005 04:26 AM

Morrisey is a ****. I hate him. Blah, that's just my opinion though, and I like that Vanilla Ice song...
