Big fan of Morrisey now, after catching his set at Reading last year. Didn't get the music so much when I'd heard it on CD but hearing it live was great. Its like the musical version of listening to a friend pour out all of their life woes in no particular order after one too many bottles of wine.

Almost expected him to have a song called "you're my bestest mate in the world and I love you and ImnotjustsayingthiscosImdrunkalthoughIamabitdrunk, do you know that? but I'm not ***, but I love you, ohmygodImsopished".

wholeheartedly agree. moz may be a bit of an arse but i think the poll was talking about voice so that's actually got nothing to do with it. where would music be today without the smiths?

Sweet Jane 01-04-2006 04:06 PM

Female: Polly Harvey for rocky stuff, Jenny Lewis or Cat Power for anything softer
Male: Rufus Wainwright, Jarvis ****er or whoever sings in the Hidden Cameras... that's beautiful melodic stuff there

The guy from the Violent Femmes has my favorite voice.

And the Decemberists are the best new Inde band.

To resume a 5 year old discussion, it definitely isn't J Mascis. I want to go with James Mercer, actually.

Sneer 08-01-2011 07:51 PM

Purely based on vocal talent - Jeff Buckley, hands down. Cliche choice I know, but there's a reason it' so.

Howard the Duck 08-02-2011 01:02 AM

Stephen Malkmus (Pavement)
Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)
Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices)

Unknown Soldier 08-02-2011 04:03 AM

Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth)

Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth)

................maybe I`m being a bit biased here!

I love seeing someone put down Colin Meloy. His voice is so full of character, and for its limits he uses it so well. He's one of my favourites as well; and I think he shows it best on Picaresque. There are songs on that album I listen to only because of the timbre and small details of his voice.

Black Francis 12-22-2011 10:38 AM

Elliot smith
Morrisey
Gordon Gano
Lou reed

but the Best is Black Francis..

Although his slurring is very unique and influenced many newer bands such as The Only One's Peter Perret, you either love or hate Lou Reed.

This is why:

He really didn't want to be there.

Goofle 12-22-2011 11:17 AM

I don't think he is a love/hate figure. I think he is a bad signer, but would happily listen to his voice all day.

Salami 12-22-2011 11:25 AM

When he was with Velvet Underground, I'd say the same!

And what was the big joke with someone comparing him to the singer from the Strokes? Just because they both slur their words isn't sufficient reason for that.

Odyshape 12-23-2011 01:13 AM

Spencer krug :D
