First impressions of the album
Was pleased when I heard the first couple of chords, seemed like the album had been recorded in fairly good quality which is usually a gripe I have with a lot of similar records. I know many are produced on next to no budget and a lot of these artists are low-fi by trade, so I understand why it's the case, but it often makes me wonder what they'd sound like had they recorded in higher quality. Nevertheless that didn't seem to be a problem here, until the vocals came in, or rather didn't. They were swept under the rest of the instrumentation and buried. I think this was intentional. I see what the band were going for, with the whole minimalist vocals making the other components stand out more. Maybe they were trying to go with the logic that their words were not important, it was about the music. But, they switched direction after a few tracks and when the vocals got turned up and became more in sync with the rest of the band, things perked up. The last track "I'm so cool, I almost like myself" is great and is the definite stand out. I feel the energy, and attention to what wasn't working and later the rectification of that, helps this stand out in a field that is swamped with similar bands. I liked this EP (demo?) and will keep an eye out for the band in future. |

Glad you dug it man, I've been really into them. It's actually 3/4 of the band Summer Vacation who are somewhat similar, in case you wanna check um out too.
I actually have the same gripe with the album- the only stuff that really comes through is the guitars and a little bit of the drums. If you really press your ears for it the bass work is pretty great. I forget his name but the singer actually writes some pretty great lyrics.

Yeah, I went back and listened to some of the emo album club entries, including the Summer Vacation album. Pretty similar formula, I liked the song Tiffany Sucks with the 'I think we're alone noowwww' drawl. That band are a bit more abrasive and punk driven as opposed to Winter Break who I felt were more melody based. I'm so cool I almost like myself is one of my current favourite songs now, really liking that track. |

S'my favorite track too.
Just reminds me of having a late warm night, some drinks, a funny cigarette, and good company in somebody's backyard.
