Key Emo Albums
1 album per artist rule to keep this list from being overlong.
.There have been many threads that recommend great emo however i have never seen one that was chronological and comprehensive. Brackets are the other genres that might also also fit with the album. 1985 - The Hated - No More We Cry (Post-Hardcore) 1985 - Grey Matter - Food For Thought (Hardcore Punk) 1985 - Rites of Spring - Rites of Spring (Post-Hardcore) 1986 - Dag Nasty - Can I Say (Melodic Hardcore) 1987 - Embrace - Embrace (Post-Hardcore) 1988 - Fire Party - Fire Party (Post-Hardcore, all female group) 1993 - Antioch Arrow - In Love With Jetts (Post-Hardcore,Screamo) 1993 - Still Life - From Angry Heads With Skyward Eyes (Post - Hardcore) 1993 - Indian Summer - Indian Summer (Post-Hardcore) 1994 - Moss Icon - Lyburnum Wits End Liberation Fly (Recorded in 1988) 1994 - Jawbreaker - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy (Punk Rock) 1994 - Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary 1994 - Samiam - Clumsy 1994 - Cap'n Jazz - Burritos, Inspiration Point... (Post-Hardcore) 1995 - Lifetime - Hello Bastards (Melodic Hardcore,Punk Rock) 1996 - Christie Front Drive - Stereo 1996 - Texas is The Reason - Do You Know Who You Are? 1996 - Native Nod - Today Puberty, Tomorrow the World (Post-Hardcore) 1996 - Boys Life - Departures and Landfalls 1997 - Mineral - The Power of Failing 1997 - The Van Pelt - Sultans of Sentiment (Indie Rock) 1997 - The Promise Ring - Nothing Feels Good 1997 - I Hate Myself - 10 Songs (Post-Hardcore) 1998 - Braid - Frame & Canvas (Indie Rock) 1998 - The Appleseed Cast - The End of the Ring Wars 1998 - Knapsack - This Conversation Is Ending...Starting Right Now (Indie Rock) 1999 - Jimmy Eat World - Clarity (Alternative Rock) 1999 - Rainer Maria - Look Now Look Again 1999 - One Last Wish - 1986 (album recorded 13 years prior not released till '99) 1999 - American Football - American Football 1999 - The Get Up Kids - Something to Write Home About (Pop Punk) 1999 - Saves The Day - Through Being Cool (Pop Punk) 2000 - Orchid - Dance Tonight! Revolution Tomorrow! (Screamo) 2000 - Thursday - Waiting (Post-Hardcore) 2000 - Dashboard Confessional (Acoustic Rock,Singer/Songwriter) 2001 - Further Seems Forever - The Moon Is Down 2001 - Pageninetynine - document#8 (Screamo) 2001 - Saetia - A Retrospective (Screamo) 2002 - Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends (Pop-Punk) 2003 - Brand New - Deja Entendu (Alternative Rock) 2004 - My Chemical Romance Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (Pop Punk, maybe emo-pop,even though they made faux emo mainstream at least there is an interest in the aftermath of that for "real emo") 2004 - Circle Takes The Square - As the Roots Undo (Screamo) 2005 - Fall Out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree (Pop Punk,Emo-Pop I hate putting this here but they and MCR must be mentioned for bringing relevance and interest to "emo".Even though there's little of the original emo found here they cite Jawbreaker and Promise Ring as influences.) Now u can see how "emo" became ****, from here on emo was ruined with Panic! at the Disco and other crappy bands untill the revival bands start showing up like The World Is a Beautiful Place,Snowing etc.. Great list. I would've thrown Gray Matter, Drive Like Jehu, and Slint somewhere up there too but this is pretty comprehensive.

The line between what post-hardcore album is emo what isn't is thin so that's why i contemplate whether Nation of Ulysses, Drive Like Jehu and Jawbox should be included. Last edited by newbands1; 05-03-2014 at 11:57 PM. |

The scenes were/are pretty intertwined. Post-hardcore, not unlike emo, has taken a turn for the worst. I can't remember a new, really good, legit post-hardcore band coming out since like... Bear vs. Shark. PUP kinda skirt the border but aren't quite it. Indian Summer cite DLJ, Codeine, and Slint as their biggest influences so I feel like they deserve mention.

To late 80's bands you can tack One Last Wish, After Words, Vagrants, Pot Valiant, and the ex-The Hated project, Three Shades of Dirty, demo (though i think that was in '90 or '91) which was awesome, too. Personally i like it better than all of The Hated's stuff with the possible exception of their Everysong LP, probably because it sounds pretty similar to the TSoD demo.
EDIT: Oops, saw the One Last Wish record listed later. |
