A Very Large Misconception...
I see alot of posts in this forum where people say that Emo is a genre for kids who "slit their wrists and act depressed" and I just had a couple ideas on this that I would like to put forth (some more serious than others :) ).
1. If all "emo kids" slit their wrists, wouldn't emo music die because all the people who liked it (or were in bands that played it) were dead? 2. If people took the time to listen to the music they are so stereotypicly criticizing, they might realize that emo lyrics aren't all about depressed (or other mentally ill people) committing suicide. 3. I think you will find that there are many people in society who are depressed, and amazingly, they don't all listen to emo... (Wow, what a revelation...) 4. On a final point, that emo (and many other forms of music as well) is a good way for "depressed kids" to express their feelings and keep from slitting their wrists in the first place. This is just my opinion, and I'm sure that more can be added... |
now i know that more than just me thinks that people are creating steryotypes and its rediculous. come on, i dont slit my wrists.
|
Good point guy.
But keep it inside, everyone already knows this anyway. It's like other stupid stereotypes about stupid **** like Japanese People, Old People, Christians, and People With Mullets. |

Youre right, saying other people are stupid doesnt make you any better, but they dont know that. It makes them feel better about themselves. I dont understand them, but Ive been around them for years now, and Ive accepted that fact that they hate me and that they're "better than me" or whatever. Now just if everyone else would just accept the fact that theres no changing some people, we'll be fine.
|
So to be clear what is emo? What kinds of bands are in this genre? Just curious. :)

we all say we hate stereotypes but by merely clasing ourselves as "emo" most peops follow stereotypes....annoyinly we dunt mean 2 follow we jst fit in2 those catorgories without doin anyfin 2 delibratly get us ther but meh who reallly cares? not me! we are hu we r n if peps cnt accept us 4 hu we r then they rnt really worth botherin with!

Of course anyone who classes themselves as emo is following a stereotype. And by calling yourself emo youre following a stereotype deliberately.
And whatever that last sentence was meant to mean, Im sorry I dont think there were any vowels in there so I didnt quite understand... But Im sure you meant well. |

I don't classify myself as 'emo', 'punk', or anything else for that matter. I suppose I would call myself a human, but some might disagree ;) It seems to me that if you classify yourself as something other than that, you are limiting yourself as an individual. I don't want to have to dress or act a certain way, because I want to be who I am, not follow the guidelines of a stereotype. I prefer to be free thinking and act how I want to act. If people want to call themselves by a label, they are free to do so. But when they volunteraily do that, they then suffer from all the stereotypes that are associated with that label (wether they are right or wrong). I choose to live without the label, and hope that people judge me by my actions, not by how I look... |
The biggest misconception.
Emo is a type of music, not a type of person. |

Most who call themselves "emo" listen to post-emo... If I went up to someone who said they were emo and said Heroin, they would say, "what???" NOT ohhh I love that band. |
I think the biggest misconception is that people really give a ****
|
^ Or that people know what they are talking about...

I'd Start saving green and before breathing
I have your voice on tape in a southern accent screaming at me I was only one and we weren’t prepared for one (I have your voice on tape in a southern accent screaming at me) So we started saving green before breathing Know things look lovely to you Holding back, now and forever sweetheart know things look lovely longing for midnight and I’ll deny You were walking so peculiar like you had something to hide (still so deadly) [x2] Sweet penance for this sound-that it might explode in her hands Bordered in a brown pigmentation Where the element lines cut short, turned in and stopped I've been watching rose giving in and that’s when I started savoring the sound I was watching rose give in to it severing the ties between mother and son [x2] Know things look lovely to you Holding back, now and forever sweetheart know things look lovely longing for midnight and I’ll deny You were walking so peculiar like you had something to hide (still so deadly) [x2] Sweet penance for this sound-that it might explode in her hand (it might explode) [x2] I once saw many places, I promised the world and a dozen roses. [x2] these are the lyrics to translating the name by saosin. now honestly do these look like they are about someone slitting their wrists? i dont think so. |
it really bugs me that people have that kind of assumption about this or any other type of music genre for that matter. i mean its funny to an extent if people wanna poke fun at it but eventually it gets annoying.
|
^ Just like any stereotype, not just music realated.
|
