Emo, Screamo, Post Hardcore, etc. suggestions

Alright I am taking a month brake from metal to learn more about these genres of music. So I am going to need suggestions of talented (Original or Technical) bands from these genres. So what are some good bands?

Laces Out Dan! 07-29-2007 10:01 PM

The Fall of Troy
The Fall of Troy
Hot Cross
The Fall of Troy

Inuzuka Skysword 07-29-2007 10:03 PM

I already listen to the amazing band, The Fall of Troy, but I will check out Hot Cross. I have to get a lot of this stuff in because I want to know a lot about these genres when the month of August is over.

Laces Out Dan! 07-29-2007 10:05 PM

Im sure you've heard At The Drive-In?

A Day in Black and White

Laces Out Dan! 07-29-2007 10:29 PM

Relationship of Command and Vaya are must haves. They're soo good.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 07-29-2007 11:09 PM

I'll give 3 to 5 selections from the main 3 you wanted.

Screamo:

Bright Calm Blue
Circle Takes the Square (or Devar-Toi who have a very similar sound)
Versoma
With Horses In Her Eyes (aka Histories)
Love Like... Electrocution

Emo:

Cap'n Jazz
State Route 522
Daniel Striped Tiger

Post-Hardcore:

Circa Survive
Evaline
Trophy Scars
Minus the Bear

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 07-29-2007 11:32 PM

Check out:

Envy (Japanese; post-rock influences on later albums, more hardcore on the older ones)
Mass Movement of the Moth (Unique screamo/post-hardcore band with some nice electronic sounds. If you check them out and like them, I recommend listening to some Song of Zarathustra as well. They're a bit similar.)
I Would Set Myself on Fire for You (screamo with some experimental tendencies and nice instrumentals.)
Saetia (I might get a bit of hate for suggesting them, but they're still a good band to get into screamo, I feel.)

xcassiusx 07-30-2007 01:52 AM

CHECK OUT...

Circle Takes The Square (one of thee most talente screamo bands, ever. crazy time signatures and epic song writing and structure)

Daniel Striped Tiger

Bright Calm Blue
("a direct approach for a casual conversation" album)

Off Minor (like Saetia, featuring 3/5 members, but way more easier for this kind of metal listener to probably enjoy...great intensity and way more talented and jazzy riffs)

Phoenix Bodies ("raise the bull**** flag" album - screamo meets tech metal and grindcore...)

You And I (one of THEE most IMPORTANT, and influential early screamo bands. They offer everything needed, the fast and chaotic screamo parts, featuring tech-metal riffs, softer and passionate moments, with hints of those mid-90s emo also, and pure genius vocal-stylizing (it's quite complex, very brilliant)

I can't believe no one has mentioned you and i
:( srslyz.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 07-30-2007 02:06 AM

I get bored of You And I pretty quickly to be honest.

Just realised the original post asked for specifically talented bands... I'd have to say CTTS too. Not that the bands I suggested aren't talented... Circle Takes the Square are just more technical.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 07-30-2007 09:39 AM

OFF TOPIC:

Drew's (CTTS) cousin is retarded. I went on a date with her. She thinks her boyfriend's band is the best thing ever.

No I will not provide the link. I also just realized she's going to the same college as me. Lame.

ON TOPIC:

Zann and Anger Is Beautiful are two bands you should probably check out. Very heavy and intense German screamo.

Since someone mentioned Phoenix Bodies, I also would check out Textbook Traitors, Army of Flying Robots, Takaru, and A Light In the Attic.

Also Kite Flying Society and A Petal Fallen creates some pretty awesome textures in their music.

Inuzuka Skysword 07-30-2007 10:07 AM

Alright so I am checking out a lot of bands. I will probably check out Circa Survive first since I have heard a lot about them.

Inuzuka Skysword 07-30-2007 11:41 AM

And where the heck is Crowquill? I know he will give me like 5 billion suggestions.

swim 07-30-2007 11:47 AM

Ethan actually doesn't listen to that much emo. I listen to too much but I don't rate technical skill (skill not important in a punk genre -no wai!) so I don't know if I'm of help. A Day In Black In White-My Heroes Have Always Killed Cowboys has some sick progressions.

It doesn't have to be technical, it just has to be either that or original to be talented IMO, which is why I asked for either original or technical bands.

xcult_classicx 07-30-2007 12:43 PM

screamo:
City Of Caterpillar
Envy
Daitro
La Quiete
Raein
Neil Perry
Orchid
Reversal Of Man
the Apoplexy Twist Orchestra
the Saddest Landscape
Funeral Diner

emo:
Portraits Of Past
Policy of Three
Indian Summer
Julia
Plunger
Don Martin 3

post-hardcore
Haram
Fugazi
Jawbox
Kerosene 454
Nation Of Ulysses
Drive Like Jehu

Honestly, I don't think Circa Survive matches with any of the other bands, but people still dig them. Also honestly, if you're looking for a huge list of just screamo stuff, I can supply my own personal list. It seems people are going into that...But I'll try to stay on topic and stick with the more technical/mathy/progressive suggestions, I thought that's what you were aiming for.

Check out my suggestions last page....

"Majestic Blue" album by Sinking Steps... Rising Eyes is also a very, very progressive and unique album. It'd be classified under screamo, but personally I'd just call it a masterpiece ;) For fans of....music? hah.

A small band that was shortly-lived is also pretty insane as well. I love this band...Swedes. Their entire 4 song EP is up for download on their myspace. I hugely suggest the two songs "1987" and "Princess Pie" all 4 are good except "Al Gore" is my least favorite.
www.myspace.com/swedesband

Exit The King is also a shortly lived and unheard of screamo band with some insane mathy tech-metal riffs.
www.myspace.com/exittheking

besides those 2 great songs on the myspace, check out the song "ornothology" on the album
download their 5 song EP here: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
(usually I wouldnt post it here, but I don't think you'll find it many other places...)

The Dave 07-30-2007 03:04 PM

Post Hardcore:

Fugazi
Quicksand
Drive Like Jehu
The Blood Brothers
Q and not U
Aghast
Nation of Ulysses

I don't listen to much emo outside of The Birds Are Spies, They Report To The Trees, Daniel Striped Tiger, Kid Crash and City of Caterpillar.

anticipation 07-30-2007 03:46 PM

La Quiete
CTTS
Thank-You For Astronauts
Wow, Owls!
My Heroes Have Always Killed Cowboys
Joshua Fit For Battle
Me And Him Call It Us

I dont know if i'd call Circa Survive and Minus The Bear Post-Hardcore.

GravitySlips 08-02-2007 09:31 AM

Unwound (early stuff)
Drive Like Jehu
The Nation of Ulysses
Young Ginns
Native Nod
Moss Icon
Indian Summer
A Day in Black & White
Gospel
City of Caterpillar
Sleepytime Trio
Maximillian Colby
Heroin
Mohinder

these are the most interesting emo/post hardcore bands (musically) that I've heard.

paengkee 08-05-2007 06:54 AM

manhattan skyline and kaospilot are pretty technical in terms of timing.

i dunno but "emo" and "technical" dont really mix too well.

anticipation 08-05-2007 12:56 PM

Loma Prieta is something i've been getting into lately. They're really heavy, and it's quite refreshing.

Slim 08-05-2007 02:21 PM

Balboa is amazing too.I'm listening "Manifeste Cannibale" right now and it's amazing.

Few others, but I've only heard bits and bobs so I'm probably missing good bands that are fairly obvious.

Thanks for recommendations so far, I'll give 'em a listen. :thumb:

Get SDRE's album Diary, it's an Emo classic, and still one of the best albums in the genre.

Oh yeah I forgot about that album. That and Empire! Empire!'s LP was pretty much all I listened to last year.

FakePlasticKid 10-14-2010 10:22 PM

ok I'm sorta out of place in this part of the forum but I need some help here

girl I'm tryin to get with right now is into the screamo and hardcore stuff but I'm a folk-nerd who loves the 80's and 90's

I like certain screamo (Alexisonfire and Eyes Set To Kill) but the lyrics always sound so pretentious and annoy me, and I don't mean to offend but they just sound like a bunch of people without problems trying to pretend that they do

so is there any in this genre that has more literal and better lyrics. Meaning no lyrics that say things like "in the shadow" "the dark sky" or "my life is a pit" or anything like that

it may help to say that I love deathcore but thats too much for this girl so PLEASE help me out guys I really need some at this point

TheCunningStunt 10-14-2010 10:26 PM

American Football? Mike Kinsella wrote some great lyrics.

But it's not Post-Hardcore, just Indie Emo but that might be worth checking out (if you haven't already heard them.) and it's quite soft so I think you'd like them even if it's not what you're looking for to woo this girl. They only had the one album before splitting up, self titled.

Brand New are Post-Hardcore/Emo with some outstanding lyrics, they might be ones to look into.
