It doesnt bother me what theyre named. It bothers me that every thread turns into an argument about whats emo and whats not. Every time we get a newbie that doesnt know what it is, a whole flamewar starts. I know its not easy to explain to them, especially if they argue back, but still.
At the MX forum they just decided that "emo" would be discussed in the Pop-Punk section and real emo would be discussed under Hardcore/Emo and it works for the most part, save for the odd misplaced thread/post.
If emo is short for emotional hardcore then why are bands like vast and spill canvas labeled emo?
I dont want to make this a heated debate, I just wanna get my point (although it may be wrong) across. lol. |
YOU SAY YOU DONT WANT TO START A HEATED ARGUMENT..........but all the posts ive seen by you look like you are trying to.
Or maybe you take them that way. I can agree to disagree, that's ok with me.
But how has emo transformed from emocore to the emo it is now? |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo Check out that site for a basic explanation. |
good definition. (the site)
But how come now people like good charlotte and simple plan fans are labeled emo? Is that just a mis-judgement? How would you label something that is completely acoustic, with emotional lyrics? How about a full band, with no screaming, but emotional lyrics? And I'm guessing a band with a full on scream like poison the well with emotional lyrics is considered emo? |
Well any band could have "emotional" lyrics, their genre would be defined by their sound. I don't know anyone who calls Good Charlotte and Simple Plan emo but I know what you mean and I'm pretty sure it came from magazines like Rolling Stone not knowing what they're talking about again.
I don't read rolling stone or any of those but I guess it's a "scene" thing. Emo here is classified as any slow emotional music. I guess maybe it's a location thing. Who knows.
all music is emotional. without emotion, music would be sh*t.
if you want a really really good explanation of "emo" as a genre, go to the thread labled "screamo" and read his first post there. |

hahaha who cares? like alot of things its a branch off of alternative rock. i guess the kiddies wanted to throw in some good old soft rock with the "edge" of alternative bands from the early 90's. but hey its just a guess. it doesnt matter all that much you know.
I'm gonna agree to disagree here. Sorry, I'm ignorant. lol.
I cant really think of the WORST band because any band that has made it far enough to put out more then one record and still be around, I've got respect for them. |
Any genre "label" is really just one person's opinion, and as such, is subject to debate. Many people may argree to one opinion, which lends credibility to the arguement, but doesn't always make it right. Personally, I have a hard time classifying bands because I can see alot of different genres within the bands I listen to. And while labels are good for helping people find new bands to listen to, they also come back to bite you in the butt (as evidenced by this thread). At the end of the day does it really matter if a band fits into the "Emo" (or the real emo catagory)? I would say no. If you like the music listen to it. If you listen or don't listen to a band based upon its supposed genre, that is very shallow. Like a band for their music, not for their label or genre.
i agree. also i kind of think its funny that if a band classfies themselves as emo that someone else can come along and be like "youre not emo!" haha i think thats hilarious.

Close it. It has outlived any sort of scant purpose it may have had. It wasn't a very good topic to begin with, just asking for a flame war.
