It doesnt bother me what theyre named. It bothers me that every thread turns into an argument about whats emo and whats not. Every time we get a newbie that doesnt know what it is, a whole flamewar starts. I know its not easy to explain to them, especially if they argue back, but still.

Electric Ocean 06-22-2005 01:43 PM

At the MX forum they just decided that "emo" would be discussed in the Pop-Punk section and real emo would be discussed under Hardcore/Emo and it works for the most part, save for the odd misplaced thread/post.

daytonasurf 06-22-2005 02:41 PM

If emo is short for emotional hardcore then why are bands like vast and spill canvas labeled emo?

I dont want to make this a heated debate, I just wanna get my point (although it may be wrong) across. lol.

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 06-22-2005 02:46 PM

YOU SAY YOU DONT WANT TO START A HEATED ARGUMENT..........but all the posts ive seen by you look like you are trying to.

daytonasurf 06-22-2005 02:48 PM

Or maybe you take them that way. I can agree to disagree, that's ok with me.

But how has emo transformed from emocore to the emo it is now?

I've never heard either of those two bands but loads of people mislabel emo all the time. What do the bands sound like because they could be emo for all I know.

I'm guessing by your other posts that you don't know what emo is, emo hasn't really transformed alot since stuff like Indian Summer, screamo evolved as a sub-genre though which sound alot heavier and is more epic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo

Check out that site for a basic explanation.

daytonasurf 06-22-2005 03:03 PM

good definition. (the site)

But how come now people like good charlotte and simple plan fans are labeled emo? Is that just a mis-judgement?

How would you label something that is completely acoustic, with emotional lyrics?
How about a full band, with no screaming, but emotional lyrics?
And I'm guessing a band with a full on scream like poison the well with emotional lyrics is considered emo?

Electric Ocean 06-22-2005 03:06 PM

Well any band could have "emotional" lyrics, their genre would be defined by their sound. I don't know anyone who calls Good Charlotte and Simple Plan emo but I know what you mean and I'm pretty sure it came from magazines like Rolling Stone not knowing what they're talking about again.

daytonasurf 06-22-2005 03:07 PM

I don't read rolling stone or any of those but I guess it's a "scene" thing. Emo here is classified as any slow emotional music. I guess maybe it's a location thing. Who knows.

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 06-22-2005 03:10 PM

all music is emotional. without emotion, music would be sh*t.

if you want a really really good explanation of "emo" as a genre, go to the thread labled "screamo" and read his first post there.

No it's just general ignorance and it happens everywhere and with most kinds of music. People on the internet will tend to bitch alot if you are misinformed but then continue to believe that your right. I can upload some emo to here if you want to hear some.

where did you get that definition.

SpeaknSpell 06-22-2005 07:13 PM

hahaha who cares? like alot of things its a branch off of alternative rock. i guess the kiddies wanted to throw in some good old soft rock with the "edge" of alternative bands from the early 90's. but hey its just a guess. it doesnt matter all that much you know.

daytonasurf 06-22-2005 07:17 PM

I'm gonna agree to disagree here. Sorry, I'm ignorant. lol.

I cant really think of the WORST band because any band that has made it far enough to put out more then one record and still be around, I've got respect for them.

phoenixflames 06-22-2005 07:37 PM

Any genre "label" is really just one person's opinion, and as such, is subject to debate. Many people may argree to one opinion, which lends credibility to the arguement, but doesn't always make it right. Personally, I have a hard time classifying bands because I can see alot of different genres within the bands I listen to. And while labels are good for helping people find new bands to listen to, they also come back to bite you in the butt (as evidenced by this thread). At the end of the day does it really matter if a band fits into the "Emo" (or the real emo catagory)? I would say no. If you like the music listen to it. If you listen or don't listen to a band based upon its supposed genre, that is very shallow. Like a band for their music, not for their label or genre.

SpeaknSpell 06-22-2005 07:47 PM

i agree. also i kind of think its funny that if a band classfies themselves as emo that someone else can come along and be like "youre not emo!" haha i think thats hilarious.

BUT if I was going to pick the worst 'emo poseur band' (which I thought this was gonna be) Id pick My Chemical Romance. I actually have nothing against them, I enjoy listening to them, but they're really not emo.

aww i love fall out boy! now im sad. :(

SATCHMO 06-22-2005 10:30 PM

This thread is EFFING dumb.

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 06-22-2005 10:46 PM

yes. i totally agree

phoenixflames 06-23-2005 06:52 AM

Close it. It has outlived any sort of scant purpose it may have had. It wasn't a very good topic to begin with, just asking for a flame war.

shandapanda 06-23-2005 07:30 AM

what am incredibly original thread! did you think of it all by yourself authorofthread?
