Metal - grew out of europe. most acts nowadays are metal core combining hardcore and metal. Known for guitar work and drumming. Bass is usually not heard. Vocals are usually throaty screams. bands: In Flames, At The Gates, Entombed, The Crimson Divine, Dark Tranquility, Nightwish, Metallica, Megadef, etc.
Hardcore - grew out of the American punk scene. Early hardcore was basic with abrasive lyrics and music. Is known for breakdowns, and drums. Styles range from the old school punkish sound (The Deal, xLooking Forwardx, Hanover Saints) to the melodic sound (FATA, Trauma,Alexisonfire, Evergreen Terrace) to the metal sound (It Dies Today, All That Remains, Darkest Hour, Killswitch Engage) to the crazy noise-esque bands (The Locust, Black Dice, Pig Destroyer, Converge). A very big genre that isn't really what is was but is still full of talent and great sounds.
I personally love melodic death metal, metalcore, scremo and every variance of hardcore. The only style I'm not huge on is the Old School sound, but those are often the best shows
