The Hated

MySpace.com - The Hated - Annapolis, Maryland - Punk / Indie / Emo - www.myspace.com/marylandhated

well I see people mention moss icon and rites of spring as being early emo bands but I never see anyone talk about this band the hated. As soon as you hear "someone" you can understand what Im talking about. They came out around 1985 and finished up around 1990. peep it

Music is good but I can't get into the vocals. Overall, pretty nice.

bardonodude 11-29-2008 09:17 AM

yea haha the vocals are a little meh

Just like The Pine

I can't really bear The Pine or Evergreen but I like these guys.

loved this band for a long time. both of their 7"s are really great.

bardonodude 12-05-2008 12:27 AM

yea I'm gonna make an effort to get them, I never knew annapolis had a thriving scene back in the mid-80's other than Moss Icon.

Check out their Self-Titled and the Homeless Life 7". The other stuff is ok, but these two are my favorites. Also, it sounds much better on record/CD than the ripped mp3s you find around. In the mp3s, the drums have a really annoying rattling sound that sort of overwhelms everything else.

Also, check out Three Shades of Dirty, similar to The Hated, but a lot easier to get into (someone recently made a new rip of the tape without the static noise in the song Stalemate). And if you've heard other stuff but not their Everysong LP, you should check that out. After listening to that LP for a while, you'll probably want to hear more and find that the other records of theirs you didn't enjoy before you now enjoy a lot.

yea I just dled their everysong lp, thanks for the recommendation of Three Shades of Dirty checking out now, I miss you chickendude :).

Hated

Somehow they did start "emo" though I 'hate' that word...however, I am from Annapolis and they actually were one of the 1st along with Tonie Joy(Moss Icon), Rites of Spring (D.C) and a few more. They were all friends of mine and it was more 'earthy hippy' hardcore with emotional vibes.... They started the 'look' as well. They all looked like futuristic hippies wearing their Dad's Pepsi and/or UPS jackets with slacks. Let's not forget Husker Du , they deserve most the credit....but since they 'signed' I guess they broke the rules? Maybe other people were playing this type of music as well but these guys were playing GOOD music that would be documented. Just wish they would have pressed more HATED records...sheeesh

really? do you still talk to any of them? I know the singer of the hated is still making music. Also, do you know if Moss Icon ever gets together anymore to playmusic haha? Im guessing almost certainly no

norrad1000 12-12-2011 11:50 AM

To BARDONODUDE, Yes actually I do see/talk to some of these people still. Tonie (Joy) claims that some of the MOSS ICON stuff is gonna be re-pressed soon(?). As far as MOSS Icon playing, they did a few shows in 2001 and I'm sure (if the timing is right) they will do it again. Also, Universal Order of Armageddon still plays here and there and they released a DOUBLE 7" of the WFMU session they did in 1994 on GRAVITY RECORDS.

If Moss Icon does represses the vinyl I will laugh so hard. That'll show kids dropping 100 bucks on a record.

Are folks still around? I was just listening to the Everysong LP today...
