It matters if the band was about not selling out and then they're all over MTV. When a band makes songs to get played on MTV, they have to change their sound in some way. Some bands that I like have changed their sound to reach more people and that doesn't bother me. It bothers me, when people discover a "new" band that actually has been around for a decade or more and don't realize that they have other albums.
I hate those people that only like the newer stuff over the older stuff. IMO, if you like a band, you should like just about everything by that band.

Clutch. This band was awesome back in '92 and '93. Then they changed their sound.
I haven't bought any of their albums since.
