Emo Survey - Calling all Lovers/Haters to speak up
Hi there music fans
I'm doing a reasearch paper on emo culture and social awareness and could really use some decent feedback from people actively involved in the scene. So, I've got a little set of questions for you to help me with my dissertation. The premise is "people are attracted to emo through a heightened sense of danger in society" Here we go: 1). Do you listen to emo? 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only) Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Thank you in advance for your help Kind Regards Ric Lean |
Yes
Yes Not sure what this has to do anything but I don't support death. Yes Positive. There are so many kids losing money to go on tour, doing basement shows, putting out cdrs. How could a place where sleeping at strangers' houses on tour and 7" splits are common place be anything less than great. 15 female Catie |

Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. For the most part, most people are trustowrthy. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? It's the ****. 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only) 17/male/Dave |

1). Do you listen to emo?
yes 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? yes 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? terrorism is something you get used to in a third world country, and so far, i think the United States has a lot to learn from countries where acts of terrorism occur more often. 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. i'm only as safe as i want to be, where i want to be. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? it's sideways an insult to hardcore, seeing all these kids with the hair and the pants and the tight shirts who know nothing about emo before the 2000s rolled in and how it's all related to hardcore. 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only) 17/male/francis maria |
1 Yes.
2 Yes. 3 I have the opinions of an intelligent person. 4 Not really, depends on the definition of safe. 5 The label emo has become retarded, I look foreword to the day that it becomes extinct amongst the masses. 6 20/male/Newcastle UK |
1). Do you listen to emo?
Not in the original sense... I'm more a fan of the evolution it took in the 90s when bands gave it a harder edge (screamo in a nutshell), though I do really enjoy a lot of progressively geared post-emo indie bands. 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? Embrace and Rites of Spring... all that snazz was boring. 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? A misdirected, ill-advised war, that lost sight of its original intention while STILL managing to raise a whole new generation of USA hating middle-easternites? All I can say is Bush is one of the worst presidents we've ever had. 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. Yeah, I live in a middle-class family and attend a major university. It's like my own little bubble to protect myself from all the harsh realities of the world. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? In a sense, the whole feeling of the music was bastardized and exploited beyond belief. I find it hard to believe that so many people think Taking Back Sunday pioneered emo without even looking further back into their influences. Anyone with a brain (except Loser, who is incapable of functioning on any level) realizes that when you compare something like My Chemical Romance to a band like June Paik, you are in completely unrelated genres. I think this more than any "trend" shows how the commercialization of a general misconception within music can create one of the most obscenely ridiculous counter-cultures to date. In short - real emo/screamo = good, poorly dressed morons driven by hairstyles and obnoxious alt-rock music = bad. 6). What's your age/gender/name? Ben Stivers, male, 19. |
1). Do you listen to emo?
sometimes, but not that often, only certain bands 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? some of 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? i think tony blair and george bush are ****heads 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. i mainly feel safe where i live but chavs and pikeys are theinly unsafeness 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? i think people who are emos are complete attention seeking fools who should get a life and people who act emo and try to be all depressed but atchully have great life but yet denie all emoness and say they also dont listen to emo but will never sshut up about my chamical romance or fall out biy but say there not an 'emo' 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only) 15/male/chris fishlock/uk |
1). Do you listen to emo?
Yes. 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? Yes. 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? I feel the war is unjustified, and has only promoted acts of terrorism against westerners. The terrorists responsible for 9/11 had no relation to Iraq and to even associate the two is ridiculous. 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. Yes, I live in a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles and I highly doubt terrorists are coming to blow me up anytime soon. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? I'm very fond of "real" Emo music, but those who call themselves Emo these days are annoying twats who've done nothing but ruin it for everyone. 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only) 16/female/Chelsea |
1). Do you listen to emo?
Yes, it is one of my favorite genres. 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? Yes. I started out thinking emo was just a fashion trend, but it was only recently that I came to discover the real stuff. 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? I dont like/support violence or war of any kind. It may just sound like an angsty teen answer, but I just despise the idea of war completely. 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. It depends. I feel very safe in my home, and in my town. But seeing things on the news and hearing about things going on in the world in other countries makes me feel insecure. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? I dont know much about the emo "culture", to be honest. All I know is that I love the music. For me its always been about self-expression, emotion and having a good time, not about a look or style. 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only) 15/Male/Matt |

1). Do you listen to emo?
Not as much as I use to, I occasionally put on an emo/screamo album I like but I still listen to post-emo quite a bit. 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? Yep. 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? Like our government sucks, the war was totally unnecessary. 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. Yeah, I don't really know why the world isn't that safe. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? The fake emo stuff like MCR and Hawthorne Heights is stupid and not just damaging to actual emo but music in general because if music is too personal nowadays regardless of the genre its labeled "emo". Actually its pretty damaging to art forms in general. 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only) 16/Male/Ethan. |

1). Do you listen to emo?
sometimes. 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? Yes 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? Mainly it makes me want britain to stand alone and stop blindly supporting america. i listen to emo because i like the music though, not because of the ideals. 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. I feel safe in the UK. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? positive 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only) 20/female/helen |
wow...I'm getting old.

1). Yes
2). Yes 3). Acts of terrorism make me feel like inhumanity is spreading to every crevice of society, it happens twenty times more when the television's off, and in no way is "terrorism" a reason for Bush to satisfy his bloodlust with oil. 4). Yes, I feel very safe. I've been granted life, if it's not taken away, then why would I waste it being afraid? 5). "Emo culture" is social vomit. 6). 16/Male/Jake Vorkapich |
1). Do you listen to emo?
Used to a lot. 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? I live in DC so definetly. 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? Haha just read all the lyrics to Horses In The Sky by A Silver Mount Zion. That's how I feel. 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. No. Radicalism is the new black. People are taking metaphores and stories way too seriously and using it as an excuse to hurt and kill other people for their fairytale causes. When the world is sick, can no one be well? 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? Haha "emo" culture is dead. The real one anyway. There are a few scattered scenes in places but they're not even considered emo now. They're just all punk rock is the real sense of the word. Not mohawk punk rock. Real punk rock. What people consider "emo" culture now is just pop culture now. I don't even get offended when people talk **** on emo because they don't know what it is and it's a thing of the past. Time to move on. 6). What's your age/gender/name? 21/m/adam |

Answering that Survey
1.Yes
2.Yes 3.Well, I think thats a little off topic, but I absolutely don't agree with the war, not only because I try as hard as I can to be a pacifist but because the "war on terror" has really lost its major goal. George just wanted to impress daddy. 4.I'm a little suburbanite safety+ American teen, I'm as safe as can be. 5.well, besides the fact that most teenagers think that just because they spent $30 on a pair of girl pants at hot topic makes them "emo", no. Its been given a certain negative tag to its name that just kills me. The fact that the people making fun of it are ignorant to it is acceptable (kind of) but when the people who claim to be Emo are more blind and stupid then the enemy, well thats a sign that the culture is dead. 6.15/male/Maxim |
1). Do you listen to emo?
No. 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? yes. 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? the term Terrorism is used by politicians to evoke fear in the people's mind so they become more realiant on their government systems. For example Due to the war in Iraq some American people have become to take what the government says as dogma as they are in a state of fear. As far as my feelings well it makes me angry that Bush manipulated Blair into sending UK troops to fight a supposed 'War on Terror' when it had no implications towards the Uk. The term 'War on Terror' is a false statement as as far as Bush's administration is concerned it appears that terror refers to extreme Islam- when in reality 'Terror' is all over the world. Not in the Mid-East. Having lived in the Mid-East recently I feel sad as Islamic people are becoming targets and suspects not only withing their home country but throughout the globe, and this is a complete misconception of the Islam faith ( of course excluding the minority of extremist groups) Iraq is a lost cause as having family who have fought in the war I know much more about the corruption and deceit that has occured- none of which will ever be reported. 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why. Yes. Living in fear is selling yourself short. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? Give or take, yes there are Emo's out there who are in it purely for the music. However, being a solid listener to Hardcore punk, in my opinion the Emo movement has given punks' a bad name as now we are associated with the many poser emo's out there that cut themseleves for attention, write suicide notes when they really don't have the balls to do it..etc. The Emo's I have been exposed to are arrogant and deluded, so personally Ihave a neagative view towards this culture. Sorry longer than a sentence! :D 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only 17/f/Chelle |
^--Way to have no clue what you're talking about.
About anything. |
1). Do you listen to emo?
Yes. 2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s? Yes. 3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel? Scared, almost bewildered that people can harbour such hatred over a topic like religion. But at the same time, I am disappointed in the media's hand at portraying Muslims as blood-thirsty terrorists when really it is the extremists that cause this violence and not the average Muslim. 4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why Yes, I feel safe most of the time. 5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative? There's a lot of misinterpretation and abuse of the term that skewes people' perception of it. 6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only) 15/M/Mackenzie |
