Best live act I've seen this year.

I didn't realise there were 5 screamo albums

The Crash of Rhinos album is in my top 5 releases of this year so far, very fucking good indeed.

I'm so confused as to what this is supposed to mean.

Screamo

1.Circle Takes The Square - As The Roots Undo (Possibly one of the best albums of all time)
2. Envy - Dead Sinking Story
3. Pg.99 - Document 8
4. City of Caterpillar - Self Titled
5. Orchid - Dance tonight, Revolution Tomorrow.

^Anybody looking to get into the genre, you can't go wrong with those 5.

I don't understand Circle Takes the Square; take the song Houdini Logic. It starts off well enough, nice single notes, drumming is appropriate, and I start thinking to myself, maybe this band is worthwhile.

And then the band decides to get random, and my frustration increases.

What don't you understand? They're Screamo, experimenting with dynamics and tempo shifts is a core element of the genre.

See, that's another thing I'm having difficulty with; is there truly a substantive difference between screamo and metalcore? This seems analogous to people claiming there's a difference between speed and thrash metal....

Eh, I would hardly call what they're doing experimenting; but even to not debate that point, I ****ing hate it.

The most obvious difference, probably, is that there is very little that is "metal" about screamo. It's a more dynamic, often melancholy form of hardcore punk. Circle Takes The Square are a bit of an exception, though, I would say.

Metalcore:

Botch are Mathcore, which differs from Metalcore in that there is a greater emphasis on speed, technicality and complex time signatures. There's a progressive element to it.

Metalcore is bands such as Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying and Bullet For My Valentine. Breakdowns, harmonised riffs, double-bass pedals and drop-tuning are key elements. Screamo differs in that it's a dissonant confluence of Emo and Hardcore Punk, characterised by melodic guitar-interplay, frantic tempo and dynamic shifts, and an intense angst/melancholy. Metal and its conventions aren't typically an influence.

Of course, this is purely my take on it all. Genre's a murky business.
