yea dude I agree, when a major label gets a hold of one band of an underground genre, they begin to be the stereotype of a whole genre of music because the given band of an underground genre is the only well known band in that genre. then other bands who sound similar get classed together and then become together the stereotype of a genre. The given band has mainstream appeal and strays away from its previous roots while still popularly maintaining its stereotyped genre that people label the band now. The same thing happened with grunge, there we so many underground grunge bands that defined the true sound of grunge but Nirvana got popular and was then looked at as the centerpiece of what grunge sounded like.

I really dont know, I just know a lot of popular bands that are characterized under a certain genre are thought to be the core sound of that genre because most people dont know about the music that is on this forum haha. For example, like how everyone now thinks that Hawthorne Heights is as close to Emo as its going to get, not even the music but the lyrics.
