Um..yes and no. They are considered that now that there is an established scene that needs some figureheads - but there was no such thing as Emo in the early 90s (not in the codified sense anyway). People who need to categorize all music probably even called them grunge at the time.

They are indeed hard to classify because their sound changed over the course of their career. The last two are not emo at all, IMO, which is why I said what I said. Defining emo band for the second wave of emo, basically. The softer kind. The first wave was a lot more hardcore (Rites of Spring, Embrace, etc).

None of this really matters though...just buy tickets for the show!
