Well, in my opinion that would be the best reason for the Mercury Prize - a recognition of currently unrecognised talent. From past winners its anybody's guess as to what the prize is actually given for. M People won it one year, which was particularly strange given the other music that it was up against.

are fall out boy big ? i've never heeard anything by them..

i listen to alot of music.. and that seems to be the only band i haven't listened to that i've heard of..
