Cutting notes too short...

I'm wondering why some pianists don't play dotted notes for their full value, and often play the next note too soon, essentially cutting the dotted note to maybe 1 1/4 instead of the full 1 1/2 duration? It's very off-putting and rushed to my ears.

I may be wrong here but my impression this fashion started with Chinese classical pianists who were often more interested in proving how fast they could play than anything else. It’s also been evident in some jazz piano improvisation but given we don’t know what an improvisation is really ’supposed’ to sound like that’s a very rough guess.
On the other hand some of this could be due to listening to piano through badly implemented compression algorithms.
I suppose I’m really saying I don’t know the answer to your question. I'm just guessing.
