Cure for Pain - Morphine
Sorry but I really really hated this. I hated his voice, the music did nothing for me and I just couldn't wait for it to be over. I don't know what it is about this but damn it grated on my nerves and I think I need morphine of the real sort after having sat through that. I apologise but I have to be honest, the worst album I've heard here. Rating: 3/10 BLNT!

Thanks guys! I'm hanging out at a beach town with my wife. I got myself a copy of Rush's A Farewell to Kings on vinyl today from an antique store. Also, I'm drinking lots of beer. |

PSA about the above album: don't be fooled by the band name, Field Music does in fact not do field recordings. The album should be easy to find on youtube or spotify
meanwhile I'm catching up with Morphine: I like the bass and percussion of Buena and the saxophone that comes swooping in too because it's nice and meaty, more so in the verse than in the actualy chorus. Very nice song. Candy is too derived conceptually from Lou Reed, without the same charm. It's an ok song though. The song after that starts to drag a little. The music is still mellow and all right but not much more. All Wrong wakes me up again because it's groovy, but I like A Head With Wings best so far. The rhythm is nice and the saxophone gets fun and squeaky. The opening of the next song is too reminiscent of that annoying Led Zeppelin IV track (I think it's Going to California?). I prefer this singer over Robert Plant though (Elph should have thrown that cake in his face). I like Thursday quite a lot, with it's obscenely fat sound, but I can't really get enthusiastic about Cure For Pain. The Mary song feels a bit too genre-conscious in an affected way, but again, not bad. I quite like Let's Take a Trip Together, it's the kind of song with repetition that works and gets you into a zone. I feel indifferent about Sheila. The last track is atmospheric in a nice way. Overall all right, another 7/10

That comparison to Lou Reed for the Candy song never occurred to me, Marie, but the minute I read it, it made perfect sense.
In other respects, I think your reaction to the album wasn't so different from mine: good in parts but weak in others. That's why I was genuinely surprised that you liked it so little, Trollheart; when I nominated it I thought "Not the greatest album in the world, but it has some solid tracks that'll have broad appeal". Well, at least you did Morphine the honour of giving it a numbered rating. Some albums here weren't even accorded that courtesy under the glareful Eye Of Trollheart, remember? Trollheart at his computer: Happy Hols, SGR! (Though perhaps you are back now already. Either way, I hope you put in some time listening to the Field Music album too.)

FIELD MUSIC- TONES OF HOME
This is a rather unique sound for the most part. I'd guess I'd compare them closest to a prog rock influenced Spoon. It isn't bad but it probably isn't the most exciting album I've heard either. The first two tracks especially don't excite me, but the title track I kind of like a lot. They basically seem to have a minimalist sound for the most part, very art rocky. Kingston is another song I think is rather nice, mellow. The vocals overall are gentle and they make good use of the string instrumentation. Place Yourself also stands out or me, kind of a good time feel to it. So, yeah, it's a nice listen. Not a classic by any means, but a decent album by an unassuming group of musicians. So... 7/10 (The Word has spoken ) |

Field Music - Tones of Town
I give this one an 7.5/10. Right off the bat, the band reminded me of Sloan, a favourite Canadian indie group. The singer's voice sounds like the recently dunked in hot water Win Butler. Tones of Town is the standout track to me. Had I known about this album during its release, I would have bought it pretty quickly. |
