May I check to see if the instruction, Say "when"! is commonly known in the US and elsewhere? It's for when you are pouring a drink for someone and you'll keep going til they tell you to stop.
That's what makes this Cristina lyric so good:"Nobody says grace, nobody says when". It's like a pun about the way we use the verb "say" in set phrases, but also gives us Cristina's observation: nobody gives thanks, nobody says "that's enough". She very neatly tells us: We are all ungrateful and greedy. So, yeah, great lyric.

Yeah I'm of course aware of that phrase. To bring the tone down - which you would never do, Lisna - it's also used when looking at a woman in very tight jeans or a figure-hugging dress/skirt: "Looks like she was poured into that/them and forgot to say when!"
Trollheart: bringing the tone down since 2011

I'm very happy if I've helped your appreciation of a song, Marie! Your English is so good that I think we all forget that it's not your first language.
And thanks to you for introducing me to the talented Cristina. ...and yet your "join date" is 2008: What happened? You spent 3 years on your best behaviour and then decided "Sod it! They can handle the full-on Trollheart!"?!

Ah, gather round the fire, children, and ignore the howling wind outside (must remember to fix that window!) and I shall tell ye the oft-related tale of the venerable Trollheart, who one day did stumble him 'pon the land foretold by the sages, and also the thymes, rosemarys and the odd basil, a land of wond'rous discourse and vitriol, and occasional music. In this great land dwelt such legendary figures as the one known as Urban, Jack O'Hammer and the mighty one, she who ne'er bestrode a horse in her life, the famed Pedestrian. Also in this mythic crew were He From the Land of Frown, The Third One Who Is Large, The Eternal Listener, She Who Doth Burn Down and many other luminaries.
And some wanker called the Batlord. And into this wild and untamed land strode the young knight, stout of heart but weak of bowel, and lo! Lasted he not long, for thin was his skin, and the many and varied comments directed against him did soothly (it's a word I made up, want to fight about it?) assail his shield, this being in a time before the Hawk, when things were not UnAssailable. And struck down by barb and jest, he did retreat and hie him the **** out of there, with many a snarled retort (though none in a voice any man could hear, yea, were he to strain his ears to the utmost, nor even using the trumpet of the ear) declaring 'twas an evil place, and he would no more darken its dread doors. All of this, my gentle children, is said to have taken place in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Eight. Yea, truly! Exile was his lot. And wandr'ing lone and bored the **** out of his head three long years to the day did this thought enter his mind, and it was this. This was the very thought, and he thought this: what the **** is wrong with me? I'm going back! For a truly wonderful thing had happened, my children. The errant knight had grown him a spine, yea, and indeed a pair into the bargain. And so, armed with new thickened skin with a lifelong guarantee, return in 100 days if not completely satisfied, though good luck getting your money back as we will be long gone, drinking Mai Tais on a beach somewhere, did he again enter the fray, and gaveth as good as he got. Eth. Or something. And 'twas indeed a sad day, children, for the moral of the story be: once Trollheart doth lodgeth himself somewhere, tis well nigh impossible to get him the **** out of there. Many times since hath he retreated in sulking pout, only to come back again, just when all believed it safe. And now, my children, thinkest I it is time for you to be heading home, lest yon guardians of the peace twig mine game and search mine room. Not that they would find any incriminating videos, nay, not even a hidden hard drive with questionable images 'pon its carven surface, but still, as the sages doth say: better safe than sorry! Out now, and home to your parents. You have none? Ah, then, in that case... **** off anyway. What dost thou thinketh this is, a doss house? Where be mine shotgun?

HaHa! That's a lot more answer than I expected, Trollheart! I liked the names of the previously-active members that you medievalised.
Yeah, I remember the sad occasion when you left us for a while. Boy, was the forum quiet then. Was it really for three years?! Well, good to have you back, and back on form.

Okay, so Cristina's Sleep it Off
A new wave album from someone who sounds European but apparently isn't. I've never heard of her - and that's a good thing for an album club. The first three songs are okay, the standout being "Ticket to the Tropics", but I can't help feeling like I've heard this song before - not the same song mind you, but many songs that sound very similar. What the **** is up with the abrupt end to "Quicksand Lovers" - it's so jarring, every time I hit it, I think my wifi has stopped working or there's buffering going on - until the next song comes in. Who the heck is that singing on "Ballad of Immoral Earnings"? Not into that voice at all. "She Can't Say That Anymore", with its woozy synth intro and whispered refrains and catchy chorus is definitely a highlight. That sax in "Blue Money", now that's what I'm talking about. This song swings! Cristina's voice is so emotive here. "Dont Mutilate My Mink" maybe THE highlight - this song rocks and the chorus is syrupy sweet. Is this song against using mink fur for coats - or is it about her not wanting people to mess up her mink coat? A double entendre? Anyways, it's lovely. Nah, maybe I'm wrong - "Smile" might be my favorite. A beautiful tune! Sounds like The Sundays playing a song with Chrissie Hynde singing. Yeah I love this one - the chorus isn't as as great as "Dont Mutilate My Mink", but the verses are better. And then there's "Deb Behind Bars" - the weird post punk diddy. And speaking of diddy, I couldn't help but wonder what that intro reminded me of - yknow, the weird synth xylophone (or glockenspiel) parts? Then it hit me - it reminds me of the music of DK64 - this one isn't a perfect comparison - but I swear there's a song on that game that sounds just like 'Deb': "Things Fall Apart" starts off like a lullaby before it kicks into a Magazine esque stomp with Elastica vocals - very good stuff. "When U Were Mine" is a nice track - the backing music is better than the vocals though. The music is a glitzy new wave romp. It could've been a hit with a different vocalist. Bad song to end the album proper though. So yeah, overall, never heard of her before, but this is a nice album. My impressions are based on the expanded CD version - the tracklisting thing confused me. My takes here are qualified with the fact that I might like the original tracklisting better (I probably would) But with the expanded CD version, it doesn't really flow - it sounds more like a hits collection than a proper album - and it's a touch too long for what it is. That's the trade off I suppose, most of the songs are enjoyable or even better new wave earworms, but there doesn't feel like there's much continuity in the album to me. Cristina seems like a dynamic and charismatic presence, and I may check out more from her. *checks RYM* Wait, this was her last album, and she's only got two? Why?! I was expecting to find some collaboration with Gary Numan or something. And she died from COVID complications on 04/01/2020? - that's the worst ****ing joke I've ever heard. Oh well. This album is better than what many artists leave behind. 7/10 Do spotify tracks differ by region? On my spotify, Quicksand Lovers still has that weird jarring cut at 03:16. Unless....the end of the version on Youtube is even worse. Last edited by SGR; 05-27-2022 at 11:15 AM. |
