I don't know too many of his albums, but I'd probably agree that LWP was his best. I imagine if you have that, maybe Faith and then top it up with L&G you probably have all you need. Though I think his orchestral work might be worth listening to. One day I must do so.

It's kind of odd that you begin in the OP by saying you're a big fan, then sort of start sneering at his body of work. I mean, which is it? The guy died young-ish, but was about to retire, or had retired, by then anyway. It's probably not something he would want to be remembered by, but he did have a massive career with Ridgley before he became famous as a solo artist. Wham! had what, four albums I think, and many number one singles, pretty much most, if not all, written by him, so it's a decent return for his age.
If you look at his solo output, he seems to have been more concerned with quality than quantity, releasing albums years apart. I'm not sure it would have helped to have had an album a year, wherein the quality was likely to dip, so I think maybe he did the right thing. I just find it hard to take you seriously when you flip-flip on him as you're doing in the space of a few posts. I mean, are you a fan or are you not? Of course this doesn't mean you slavishly adore everything he put out, but considering the way you begun the thread I would have thought you'd be more on the lines of defending him than either attacking/denigrating him or just suddenly going with the popular opinion, which seems to be what you're doing. Up to you, but if you like an artist and are a fan then I'd be more inclined to fight his corner, as it were, rather than fold at the first negative comment. Also, given your love of certain decades I would have thought you'd be championing his music. Anyhoo, in terms of decent songs - as I say, I haven't heard all his albums - I'd rate the following: Jesus to a Child Cowboys and Angels Praying for Time A Different Corner Father Figure One More Try Freedom Faith Kissing a Fool Mother's Pride Heal the Pain Waiting for That Day I'd also give honourable mentions to Careless Whisper and from Wham! Where Did Your Heart Go Club Tropicana and, **** it, why not? Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - it's a ****ty, throwaway song but damn does it make you want to dance! However they both should burn in Hell for inflicting the horror of "Last Christmas" on us for all time....

I'm a big fan. I don't think I would call myself a dedicated fan - since I only have two releases of his - the Ladies and Gentlemen compilation and Patience. He is not the kind of artist of whom I feel the need to have everything.
I did not like Wham! much, and so when he went solo it took me a little time to overcome my scepticism. His first album had me thinking "Hmmm, he can actually write good songs", but it was a couple of tracks from the second album that made me realise just how good he was capable of sounding. Especially "Cowboys and Abgels". |

Well, part of the reason for that was his dispute with Sony over their (alleged) lack of support for LWP vol 1. Since he was under contract to them, he could not just record with someone else, and so that effectively meant he could not record and release anything for a period of several years.
