Now that I look at it, the surprising thing for me is how few of these albums are also my favorite ones from these artists.

The Nick Drake one absolutely, it's his true masterpiece although I love everything he's ever touched... and I guess the Stooges one too, though Idiot does complicate things here.

The debut was cool but it was a taste of Fun House and Raw Power.

Is this your surprise return, Ninetales? I haven't seen you around for ages.

HaHa! Thanks, ribbons! ...and ten out of ten for speaking British.

What's with all these Apple albums? I've never heard of them, although several people have also selected Neapolitan's #8 in their lists.

The Beatles' record company was Apple so maybe there is a link

PS- The Silver Apples' debut album is fantastic.

^ in case you are wondering the band named themselves "Apple" before Steve Jobs got his filthy hands on the name and also before The Beatles used it for their "plan of mice and men" business adventure - Apple corp.

Silver Apples are from NYC. Simeon built his own instrument out of oscillators and telegraph keys. Their album cover (the two band member in a Pan Am cockpit) set into motion a chain reaction that ended with their record label being sued out of existence. I like how they are called "electronic tribal rock" in this review, now that is a genre name that should have taken off -- but maybe not on a Pam Am flight.

Apple was a band from Cardiff. They were signed to the same record label as The Troggs. Apple recorded one album and didn't chart well with their singles. They were most likely forgotten till the album was released years later as a CD and then inevitably got mentioned on the interent.
The Otherside is a favorite. I saw the song described as "Post Psychedelic" in an album review. Never saw that genre name used before, but perhaps it is. The lyrics and fuzz guitar still keeps it in the Psychedelic zone. However with the background piano music I tend to think they're forward thinking & little bit ahead of their time with this song. That type of dramatic piano playing reminds me of The Motors and The Boomtown Rats, bands that came out years later.

Apple -The Otherside

Was kidding about the Beatles.

Also, and you probably know this, Nea, Steve Jobs took the Apple name from the Beatles' record label. The Beatles would later sue and they made some sort of agreement where Jobs' Apple could keep the name.

The Otherside really is a cool song, isn't it?

I was kidding too ... about Steve Jobs having filthy hands. He was a billionaire. I am pretty sure he could afford handsoap. : /
I vaguely remember that story about the use of the Apple name. Did you know (I'm sure you do) the group, The Fool, that name painted Eric Clapton's Gibson SG guitar also painted The Apple Corp building in a psychedelic motif with bright bold colours but then certain people in the area complained about it so The Beatles had the building painted all white.

Both Sides Now is the reason I placed Solid Gold 69 in the #1 spot. I love both Judy Collins and Joni's version. When Chet plays the song I can imagine either of them singing it.
