"from this Crawley follower"
Someone mentioned Downton Abbey. I haven't seen a singe episode. I thought if it seems popular enough maybe it's reasonable to assume that it could be a clue. He's using something sorta popular so the few in-the-know can arrive at the answer. If it's too cryptic and no one gets then the quiztakers would turn against the quizmaster. He could possibly face losing his audience and have no one to quiz.

OK I had to look up info on Downton Abbey. Robert Crawley, the 7th Earl of Grantham and Viscount Downton had a son but died - it was miscarrage. With no living son as a heir it three went to three cousins who all so happen to die too. This leave his nephew, George, heir presumptive to his grandfather's title and estate. OK so maybe it's George. I was thinking what Boy George song could it be but none of his song I saw fits the "five letter" criterion.

"Remove the why"
The "why" made me think of line from Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem, The Charge of the Light Brigade. "Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die." That made me think what makes people do things without understanding why. Maybe the quizmaster who came up with this quiz might be under the impression that when you remove the why then you have to do things out of "faith!?" Not sure, it was a leap to come to that conclusion. At the same time I am simultaneously thinking maybe it's George Michael. He had a song with only five letters and it was a hit, nothing too obscure there. I thought it was kind of a wonky connection, but it vicariously fits the quizmaster's criteria.

IDK. I don't have the slightest clue what that quizmaster is thinking.

*were*

Well, that was stupid.
Didn't the C.R.E.E.P. who put that together know that "crawly" doesn't have an "e"?
Plus, it doesn't "follow," but rather, precedes it.
