The Same Is Always Different by susana santos silva

Solo work from her crib during lockdown. Drone and noise on a trumpet and/or a flugelhorn. She’s highest tier unassailable and I like her best unaccompanied.

5/5

Sun Piano (Laraaji)

I like this guy so much. Not just his music but the way he presents it as well. So cool.

A short and worthwhile art pop ep

A Slow Dance With Someone Who Is Leaving You by Nick Keeling

https://nickkeeling.bandcamp.com/alb...is-leaving-you

It’s kind of Satie if he was little tipsy and had been listening to ragtime (it’s not at all ragtime but it is has this upbeat tonality uncommon in this genre -neoclassical ambient - more traditionally tonal than typically ethereal) mixed with tape loops and analog recording hiss. The piano playing really progresses impressively as the piece continues. Very pleasantly coherent.

Really good American primitivism

Should appeal to fans of Basho and Fahey

To Feel Embraced by SPARKLE DIVISION

Granted this gets top priority by nature of what is but it’s definitely one of my faves of the year and maybe my AOTY of the year so far.

najlepszamuza45 08-24-2020 04:37 AM

I really like 'Manic' by Halsey

HippoInAnApron 08-27-2020 05:16 AM

I’m really liking the new Alanis Morissette album, “Such Pretty Forks in the Road”

OccultHawk 08-28-2020 07:54 PM

Forgotten City by Frode Gjerstad Trio + 1

Solid free jazz release

Eostar + Si tu lae vois, salue-lae Léonie Risjeterre & Ross Heselton

https://soleilsbleus.bandcamp.com/al...alue-lae-sb022

This is a really special mix of field recordings of birds, American primitivism style guitar, and crooked avant-garde weirdness.

5/5

Cathartic.

loving- if i am only my thoughts

Well-crafted soft yacht rock.

Ant, I think you’d like this one.

grindy 09-10-2020 06:10 AM

Yacht Rock isn't that well defined and I'm no expert but I really wouldn't call this album that.

I noticed pitchfork called it country/folk and I didn’t agree. Google calls is alternative/indie. I thought I was making a fair distinction when I called “soft” yacht rock. What wound you call it? Also seems like one you might like. Got an opinion?

grindy 09-10-2020 07:09 AM

I'd probably call it Neo-Psychedelia.
I thought it was not bad but ultimately not engaging enough.
I know it is supposed to have this lazy and a bit bored vibe and I can generally dig stuff like that but I prefer music of this kind to be a bit groovier.

Anteater 09-10-2020 07:17 AM

They've definitely got that 1970 through '73 soft rock sound down pat.

grindy 09-10-2020 07:24 AM

What are the most consistent, grooviest and least cheesy yacht rock albums out there?

Fair enough. I have a feeling these songs are growers though. I know there’s plenty to choose from and time is precious but ... hey I forget, did you ever get into that band Drugdealer?

Preciate your comment too, Ant.

Once again I found them to be not bad but had similar issues as previously stated.

One Trick Pony, Paul Simon (1980, Warner Bros.)

I forgot this was a movie, too. The album isn't bad. Doesn't have classic numbers like his first two or three releases but it's an intriguing listen.

This thread is only for this year's albums.
Here's the general one:

Long Time Passing: Kronos Quartet and Friends Celebrate Pete Seeger by Kronos Quartet

https://kronosquartet.bandcamp.com/a...te-pete-seeger

I’ve been a fan of Pete Seeger and The Weavers for many a moon and I really like this. I feel like they do a great job of catching the essence of Pete Seeger and beyond that the orchestrations catch a kind of Aaron Copland nostalgia that really touches the heart. I’m probably not going to do an AOTY list for 2020 but if I did this would be on it. Sam Amidon sings on it and he’s just got such a fantastic tender beautiful voice.

Invisiblenight 10-11-2020 09:00 PM

Yeah, I agree with you. Course it's kinda hard to mess up Pete Seeger. But went and gave the Kronos Q a listen via your link and I liked it. Nice stripped down bluegrass.
