^ Not bad. Has kind of a nu-jazz vibe at times.

No sarcasm I’m not quite sure what the difference between nu-jazz and smooth jazz is.

Nu-jazz tends to lean towards dub, trip-hop, Balaeric EDM etc. and has those kinds of influences. Very easy to identify: Kyoto Jazz Massive and The Cinematic Orchestra helped popularize that sound in the early 00's. Think Massive Attack doing a James Bond film soundtrack and you've got the vibe.

Smooth jazz and the whole fuzak thing has a different sort of musical heritage, but tends to rely on more 80's keyboard sounds and a focus typically on some Kenny G-esque sax player or a guitarist like George Benson. Occasionally crosses over into yacht rock stuff. Think the Weather Channel circa 1992.

Thanks

A genre is a big place but George Benson shouldn’t be lumped with Kenny G ever

I was referring more to George Benson's super smooth technique. Most of the guys in smooth jazz who are legitimately good on guitar either have a strong Wes Montgomery vibe going on...or they just tend to emulate Benson.

Okey Dokey by Daniel Thompson / Colin Webster

https://colinwebster.bandcamp.com/album/okey-dokey

Quote:
released October 26, 2020

Daniel Thompson - acoustic guitar
Colin Webster - alto saxophone

Side A recorded at De Singer, Rijkevorsel on 19th October 2019
Side B recorded at Jazzblazzt, Bocholt on 11th November 2019
This is damn good free jazz and I’m looking at you Frown. I know covid has halted all but these guys were touring and they ain’t got nothing on you. I don’t know much about what you’d have to sacrifice professionally to tour but you’re right up there with a lot these folks.

The Catch of a Ghost by Hamid Drake, Maâlem Mokhtar Gania, and Peter Brötzmann

Has this slipped under our 2020 radar?

More spiritual than free to my ears. Unassailable.

Absolutely essential. Exo if you haven’t heard this I promise you’re going to love this. Frown Grindy - this is not to be missed no matter how crowded your listening is

Quote:
Trumpet player Steph Richards was born in Alberta, studied music in the U.S. and Canada and moved to New York in 2008. There, she co-founded the Asphalt Orchestra. She's also recorded with composers Henry Threadgill, Anthony Braxton and John Zorn. In 2014, she began teaching at UC San Diego. Last year, Steph Richards released a solo trumpet album. Now, she's back with a quartet. Jazz critic Kevin Whitehead says Richards is one to watch.

I didn't realize she had such an extensive list of collaborators, I thought she was a UCSD student/adjunct that was taking off in our local jazz scene lol
