Desert Island Discs
This is a new thing, my own original idea and if the BBC say they've been doing it since the forties they're lying bastards and I'll see them in court.
You surely all know the deal: pick eight albums (ten if you want) that you believe you could not live without, one (or more, if you prefer) books and one "luxury item" (huh?) that you would want with you if you were stranded on a desert island. Ignore for now the fact that there'd be no electricity or internet, and that you'd probably be more concerned with survival than music. Just go with it. Don't just name albums; give your reasons for why they're important to you, post extracts if you want. Break up your selection into a few posts if you like. Same with the book(s): why is it/are they so indispensable in your view? Might be fun... you remember fun, don't you?

Sigh...
Don't just name albums; give your reasons for why they're important to you This isn't a list-dumping thread. It's an attempt to get people talking about their favourite albums and why they like them. Also see, why do I bother?

Tain't set in stone, son. Depending on how much interest there is, people can decide how many they want to set as a limit. The original says eight records, one book and one "luxury item", but we don't have to stick to that.
But no goddamn lists please. Put a bit of effort and thought into it if you're going to take part.

1. Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band because it changed my perspective on music and is always good for a listen.
2. Sun Ship by John Coltrane because I can get lost in it. 3. Nuevo Dia by Lole y Manuel because it's great why the **** else. 4. Black Up by Shabazz Palaces because man's gotta boogie. 5. Deceit by This Heat because it's has that once in a century type of perfection. 6. There's a Light That Enters Houses With No Other House in Sight by David Sylvian because ya boi needs to brood sometimes. 7. At the Mountains of Madness by Electric Masada because it's long and awesome. 8. NTS Sessions by Autechre because I don't have any techno banger **** up here yet and it's long. Book: Rings of Saturn. It's my favourite book and has so many little pockets to uncover each time you read it, even if it's not particularly long. I'd take the English and German versions so that I could learn a bit of German to pass the time. Luxury Item: A fully stocked and staffed yacht to GTFO this island.

I made a list of 10 albums but I will sit on it for a night or two before I commit.
Bringing just one book is interesting. Books are a medium that I basically never find myself revisiting, so reading the same book over and over leads me to want something that’s very dense and challenging to read. Or maybe I’d want a large collection of short stories so I can feel like I’m traveling to all kinds of different places or times while still remaining in my one-book limit. Or maybe I’d want a comic book or graphic novel to give me some art to look at in addition to what I’m reading. Pretty hard to decide, really
