Classic Songs I Have Never Heard

Some years ago I started a journal called Classic Albums I Have Never Heard, focussing on, well, classic albums I had never heard. I don't have the time to resurrect that again, but there are still thousands and thousands of songs I probably should have heard, but never have. Being someone who doesn't listen to radio, follow trends or watch music TV, I tend to miss out on the big hits and later classics. I've never, for instance, heard a single song by Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars ... in fact, to paraphrase Ned Flanders and use a little hyperbole: you name it, I haven't heard it!

So this is your chance to educate me. I'll accept up to five songs per turn, any genre, any artist. They don't have to be classic songs, though it would be nice if they were ones everyone thinks I should know, but hell, if you think they're classics that's good enough.

To prevent everyone posting a million videos and overwhelming me, you'll need to nominate your songs, which is just a smart way of saying tell me what you intend to post, so that, should I actually know some of them, I can save you the trouble. Once approved by me, you can post away.

Then I'll give them the old Trollheart treatment, see if I agree I've been missing out, see if maybe I need to check out the album(s) they come from.

Oh yeah: let's for now limit it to one song per artist from the same member, otherwise I'll end up getting like twelve Dissection songs from Batty or something. Keep the variety going is what I say.

Also, when suggesting or posting tracks, if it doesn't mention it in the video can you please advise what album your song is from? Some artists have huge discographies and I don't want to waste time trawling through them looking for a song, single or track. Thanks.

So then...

My pick for greatest song ever written that's under 2 minutes

Trollheart 11-11-2019 10:04 AM

What did I just say? Don't post till you... ah, **** it who cares? Post away I guess, but if I know the song I'll just ignore it (but I'll tell you). I don't know that one, so you're first on the list.

YorkeDaddy 11-11-2019 10:06 AM

I guess I just wasn't sure what you meant by "nominate" the song first. That's my bad

It's all good, no problem.
I just meant something like "have you heard this/these" but it doesn't matter. Chances are nobody was going to pay a blind bit of attention to my rules, and I'm sure Batty would have complained anyway. Carry on.

Heard none of them, so post 'em up and I'll let you know what I think.
Is Simon Finn anything to Tim?

Plankton 11-11-2019 10:40 AM

Have you heard anything by Zebra?

I edited them into the post. Also I don't think they're related but Simon is involved with Current 93 if you're familiar with them.

When you say "Classic Songs" what immediately comes to mind for me are old R&B and Golden Oldies of the 50s and 60s. However if you want to use the broadest definition and the widest umbrella for "Classic Songs" then I will include anything, any genre, whether the song made the charts or not. I am a fan of a bunch of stuff that doesn't make it into the charts. I have plenty of songs I could mention regardless what anyone thinks it has earned its "Classic" status. It's all relative anyway for this forum at this point.
  1. The Ink Spots - Slap That Bass
  2. Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five - Beans and Cornbread
  3. Chuck Berry - Come On
  4. The Cadillacs - Speedoo
  5. Bo Diddley - Road Runner
  6. Slim Harpo - Shake Your Hips
  7. Wilson Picket - A Land of a Thousand Dances
To keep track of songs I posted for MarieMarie I made her a playlist. I'll do the same for you. It's entirely up to you if you want to use it or not.

Title:”The Night Watch”
Artist: King Crimson
Taken from: Starless and Bible Black
Genre: Progressive Rock
Year: 1974
Suggested by: Frownland
Familiarity: I’ve heard some KC albums; not this one though
Comments: Really like the slow buildup, love the way the drums pound in and then horns coming after them with what could be guitar (knowing Fripp it could ALL be guitar!) with a kind of Spanish sound to the melody? Violin now and it’s the great John Wetton, may he rest in peace, on vocals, which is SO much better than on Discipline. Nothing against Adrian Belew, he’s a good singer, but come on: this is Wetton! Great guitar work (surely that can be taken as read?) and overall a really great tune. If the rest of the album is like this then it’s no wonder it’s regarded as one of Crimson’s best.

Nice, one of my favourite KC tracks. No horns if you can believe it, just guitar, violin, bass, and possibly mellotron.

Artist: Simon Finn
Taken from: Pass the Distance
Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Acid Rock/Folk Rock
Year: 1970

Familiarity: Zero
Comments:Hmm. Thirty seconds in and I hear nothing. Not a thing. One minute in. Two. Still nothing. Not a whisper. What the blue living -? Three minutes. Pausing the video to make sure my speakers are still working. Yep. Back to the video. Four minutes. Checking YouTube isn’t muted. No, it ain’t. Still nothing. Suddenly starts just after four minutes. What in the name of Satan? Not mad about the vocal now that it’s started. Organ is nice, but I’ve been biased against this by having to wait for so long. Can’t say I like this at all. No sir.

Comments: Oh dear God! This is the kind of pop music I hate. That synth is grating on my nerves and I hate her voice. Well I don’t necessarily hate her voice as such, but I don’t like it. Wouldn’t listen to this again. Like Cyndi Lauper on speed with the Art of Noise backing her or something. Yuck.

Artist:Rosalía
Taken from:Los ángeles
Genre:New Flamenco/Urbano
Year: 2017
Suggested by: Frownland
Familiarity: Zero
Comments: Like acoustic guitar intro, could do without the kid speaking in Spanish, but Rosalía has a beautiful voice, which coming after SOPHIE’s assault on my ears (to be fair, it was more the ****ing keyboards than her, but still, didn’t help) is a real benison. Just lovely. Very relaxing, very elegant, very restrained. Love this. She shows how powerful her voice can be about halfway through when she rips loose. Stunning. The cellos or violins are lovely when they begin, but a bit off-putting as they go on. Still a great song though.

If you didn't hear anything for four minutes then you either need to check your speakers, your internet connection, or listen to it louder because it definitely ain't silent.

I think I may have muted the tab when I went from my Google Doc back to the MB one. I'll give it another listen later.

From the confessions in your OP it sounds like you and me fall into the same category Trollheart: old duffers out of the loop of modern mainstream music. Are we missing out on much? Occasionally a song or two from that other world of music penetrates my voluntary seclusion and makes me wonder.

So, not my genre and not my generation, but here are a couple of Lady Gaga songs you may have missed:

Lady Gaga, from album, The Fame(2008): Poker Face or Brown Eyes

( If Poker Face is new to you, I suggest listening to a clip that has the lyrics. If you're familiar with that famous song, you could try the lesser known Brown Eyes. Either way I'd be curious to know what you make of one of them.)

The Ink Spots started way before Rock and Roll, and Doo Wop. At that point in their career they were a "Vocal Jazz" group. The song was written in 1937. The music was composed by George Gershwin and the lyrics by Ira Gershwin. You are absolutely free to consider George and Ira Gershwin Doo Wop, do whatever you want, but nah, don't.

Ragtime? You're killing me Smalls.
Genre: Jump Blues, (aka) Jump

Another thing. OK true this music is old, the song came out in '49 but it's not "old-time music." "Old-Time" with its origin in North American Folk music and Appalachian Folk music is something entirely different from Jump. (I say Folk I'm not talking about the commercialize American Folk Revival music of the 50s and 60s.) I don't know if this is best example to give, but Flat & Scruggs played Old-Time music and considered themselves proponents of Old Time music.

You're killing me Smalls. It's Rock and Roll.

I'm glad you like "Come On" and "Roadrunner" I was hoping the same with the others. The lyrics to "Slap That Bass" and "Beans and Cornbread" are fun. I thought you would pick up on that fun and like them as well. Maybe have a laugh and enjoyed them. However I was severely wrong on that account.

Trollheart 11-14-2019 05:16 AM

If I'm killing you, Smalls, then you're killing me Biggs. These selections are almost entirely based on what you surely must know I don't enjoy. Whether that's the case or not - and in fairness I said any genre - you can't blame me for not knowing or having to guess at a genre I'm by no means familiar with nor particularly like. Maybe next time include the genre and then I won't be killing you huh?

Point to note: I'm no fan of really much music (there are exceptions of course, but generally) before say 1960s, or really 70s. It was a bit of a trial to listen to most of your selections so maybe think more in terms of something I might better appreciate next time.

tl;dr no more music from when the world was black and white. ;)
