Title:”The Night Watch” Artist: King Crimson Taken from: Starless and Bible Black Genre: Progressive Rock Year: 1974 Suggested by: Frownland Familiarity: I’ve heard some KC albums; not this one though Comments: Really like the slow buildup, love the way the drums pound in and then horns coming after them with what could be guitar (knowing Fripp it could ALL be guitar!) with a kind of Spanish sound to the melody? Violin now and it’s the great John Wetton, may he rest in peace, on vocals, which is SO much better than on Discipline. Nothing against Adrian Belew, he’s a good singer, but come on: this is Wetton! Great guitar work (surely that can be taken as read?) and overall a really great tune. If the rest of the album is like this then it’s no wonder it’s regarded as one of Crimson’s best. Rating: 10/10 Resultant interest in album: 100% Resultant interest in artist: 100% (Kind of doesn’t count, as I’ll be reviewing them in depth in my History of Prog journal, but still…) |
Nice, one of my favourite KC tracks. No horns if you can believe it, just guitar, violin, bass, and possibly mellotron.

Pausing the video to make sure my speakers are still working. Yep. Back to the video. Four minutes. Checking YouTube isn’t muted. No, it ain’t. Still nothing. Suddenly starts just after four minutes. What in the name of Satan? Not mad about the vocal now that it’s started. Organ is nice, but I’ve been biased against this by having to wait for so long. Can’t say I like this at all. No sir. Title:"Si tú supieras compañero" Artist:Rosalía Taken from:Los ángeles Genre:New Flamenco/Urbano Year: 2017 Suggested by: Frownland Familiarity: Zero Comments: Like acoustic guitar intro, could do without the kid speaking in Spanish, but Rosalía has a beautiful voice, which coming after SOPHIE’s assault on my ears (to be fair, it was more the ****ing keyboards than her, but still, didn’t help) is a real benison. Just lovely. Very relaxing, very elegant, very restrained. Love this. She shows how powerful her voice can be about halfway through when she rips loose. Stunning. The cellos or violins are lovely when they begin, but a bit off-putting as they go on. Still a great song though. Rating: 8/10 Resultant interest in album: 80% Resultant interest in artist: 80% |

From the confessions in your OP it sounds like you and me fall into the same category Trollheart: old duffers out of the loop of modern mainstream music. Are we missing out on much? Occasionally a song or two from that other world of music penetrates my voluntary seclusion and makes me wonder.
So, not my genre and not my generation, but here are a couple of Lady Gaga songs you may have missed: Lady Gaga, from album, The Fame(2008): Poker Face or Brown Eyes ( If Poker Face is new to you, I suggest listening to a clip that has the lyrics. If you're familiar with that famous song, you could try the lesser known Brown Eyes. Either way I'd be curious to know what you make of one of them.) |
