Yeah it's all bollocks. I thought I could colour in the numbers, without the brackets, and that worked, then I bolded the colour and it worked up to the second-last track whereupon it failed. **** this. I'll just leave it as it is. Poxy thing is doing my ****ing head in!!!

Edit: The first three work. If I copy exactly the tags from track 1, delete the brackets on track 4, paste and change the number, it still fails. I am now doing exactly the same operation as worked on track one - absolutely identical in every way - but it refuses to work.

Genre Reaction: Not what it would be a few years ago; punk doesn’t scare me as much as it used to
Familiarity: Have heard of the band but have heard nothing from them
Suggested by: Neapolitan
A Little Background: Released in 1979 this is seen as a seminal record in the genre, and has been compared to Joyce’s Ulysses. Ohhhhh-kayyy…
Expectations: I really don’t know, but I don’t think I’ll hate it. Perhaps a mild Like?

Ether: Clash-ish start, with thick bass and militaristic drumming; lyrics almost spoken rather than sung. A very tight, stripped-down sound. It’s all right; I wouldn’t be mad about it though.
Natural’s Not In It: Another sharp, angry guitar opening, more kind of shouted vocals. Meh.
Not Great Men: Pretty much more of the same. Not impressed so far I must say.
(2)Damaged Goods: Fast reggae beat to this, a bit more interesting. Probably the best of a pretty bad lot so far.
Return the Gift: Back to that sharp guitar attack and a fairly uninspiring vocal line as far as I’m concerned.Good guitar riff at the end but lyrically very repetitive.
Guns Before Butter: Good interplay between guitar and bass here, sort of almost in a The The mode. Damn boring though.
(3)I Found That Essence Rare: This isn’t. It has a real spark and energy about it, and the singer stops shouting and sings instead. Best so far, well beats “Damaged Goods”. Much better.
(2) Glass: This too had a lot about it. Energy and passion, enjoyed this one.
Contract: Goes back to the annoyingly disjointed, staccato mode of much of the album and the sort of spoken/shouted vocal. No.
At Home He’s a Tourist: Kind of reminds me of the later work from The Specials. I never liked the Specials. ‘Nuff said.
(2) 5.45: This isn’t bad, but there’s been nothing to really interest me since “I Found That Essence Rare”, which is quite ironic, as I have. Found it rare, that is.
(3)Anthrax: Lot of guitar feedback in the opening to this, plus what sounds like whistle but probably isn't, then a pounding drumbeat. Instrumental up to the halfway point which makes me wonder if - no. There’s the vocal now. It’s actually not bad. A decent closing track.

Conclusion: Definitely not for me. I’ve got into some more punk over the last few years, especially Celtic, but also some hardcore (at least, so it’s called) like Frank Carter and Rise Against, but this just doesn’t do anything for me.

So, Love or Hate? I don’t hate it but it’s a definite and very clear Meh. Sorry, man.
Meh is white on light blue, tbh it isn't so "very clear." At least the album didn't invoke "Hate Reborn." And I've become skeptical of scoring anything higher than a Meh. Not a clue how you will receive my next album pick.

Well the I like the album. I think Ether has one of the greatest intros ever. Not only for a song but for an album - and to think this was their debut. The drums in Natural's Not In It is very much like something Drumbo would do. (A "Drumbo beat" - if you will.) So I was hoping you would catch that, and think maybe there is some influence from Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, and you would like Gang of Four even more! I was album under suspicion that you were a Heavy Mental fan (a "Metalhead?" I guess is what they are called) so I'm not sure why you like those aggressive guitars drenched in distortion, but not Post Punk's "sharp, angry guitars." I guess you have your reasons for you discriminating between the two. I prefer the latter. A guitar with ever so slight overdrive and a nice bright transparent tone, it's pure ear candy.

next round:
Talking Heads - Talking Heads: 77
