It's not about first cause. Even the Ramones were so idiosyncratic and distinct that they could qualify as proto-punk if you wanted to claim them as such. The first punk band or the last proto-punk band. Either way they were one of those bands sitting back and watching "punk" bands failing to live up to their promise.

I admire anyone who can write and record fully fleshed out albums singlehandedly.

Also, at the time Tom Scholz recorded that Boston self-titled, he didn't have much money. He was just ridiculously obsessed with sound equipment so he spent practically everything he had to turn his basement into a personal recording studio. It just turned out he was a better sound engineer than practically anyone else in the industry at the time, so he was able to produce some amazing sounding stuff despite having relatively subpar equipment.

Do you think that he played a larger role in influencing bedroom pop artists than the cost of production being low enough for an artist to make a home studio without spending everything that they have?
