I read a bio of Al Kooper, who produced Skynyrd's first album. In his book there's a story of one day in the studio...Al Kooper brought a guitar that Jimi Hendrix had given him to the studio to show the Skynyrd guys. The guitar was being passed around and there was much made of the fact that they were handling a "****** guitar" ( as if there were "cooties" to be had by handling it). As the story goes Ronnie Van Zant told the band maybe they ought to keep passing it around for a while so maybe some of it would rub off on them. Good story - I would assume it's true.

Who knows how the guys in the band really feel, deep down, but the rebel flag is certainly a thumb in the eye for many people and certainly feeds the stereotype. If they get accused of being racist rednecks, they deserve it.
