Album Club 2019: Demdike Stare X Il Gruppo Improvvisazione... - The Feedback-Loop
Demdike Stare X Il Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza - The Feed-Back Loop
This comes from Frownland, so you know there's gotta be something about it that is thought provoking. Bon apetit.

Sublime, as expected. The mix of rickety, acoustic (?) ambient and subtle industrial textures were so beautiful. It was quiet yet challenging, and completely arresting, even when as loud as a whisper.
I'm giving it a 9/10, and the missing point is only because I wish it had more of the beats, because I enjoyed them so much when they turned up. Good ****.

This is a big endeavor
Demdike Stare has apparently created a reinterpretation and homage to Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza‘s (The Group) The Feed-back To get a grip on things Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza includes Ennio Morricone who is one of the most prolific and important composers of the last 100 years (90 of which he’s lived through). Before tackling the Demdike Stare you might as well start with the original Structurally it’s formatted in the pattern of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony: beginning in a state of apparent ambiguity and ending in something that can sweep anyone away but instead of going from mimicking the tune-up to Ode to Joy Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza goes from something like Stockhausen to something like Can, which is pretty phenomenal since it predates Tago Mago. So does Demdike Stare pass muster? https://www.tinymixtapes.com/chocola...feed-back-loop 45 years or so later... Sure, I guess. I’m not going to score it, though, because I don’t think it’s for us. It’s like asking whether or not someone means it when they say “I love you” to their grandmother.

Due to the influence of the more experimental music I've been listening to lately, this is something I can get behind. I mean, after just listening to some mediocre German indietronica crap, this is amazing by comparison. At least something is happening here.
So what is happening here? Layers. A slow and careful crafting of ambient sonic layers that requires active engagement from the listener. The fact that the album is divided into only two sides is not a mistake or due to laziness on the part of the creators. No, they want engagement, not instant sound byte satisfaction for people who can't listen to more than three minutes of music at a time. The sparse piano work of Side A is joined by haunting, echoing vocals on Side B, and this is underpinned by a sense of rhythm that is lacking on Side A. All in all, this album feels like they've come together to build a beacon, and once they get it up and running, they start broadcasting their signal. 7/10 |

While I like that 1970 "original" more than this particular interpretation of the suite, there's a deeply dissonant charm to it that is almost beguiling as you let it sink in. I liked side B more than side A, but that's just because I also tend to appreciate a wider canvas of sounds when it comes to experimental music in general, especially if there's a strong electronic or ambient background to it.
All in all, this was a welcome discovery. 7.5 out of 10

Sorry I took the last few albums off. Was super busy with the move and with work.
Fantastic album. Dissonant yet oddly beautiful in many ways. Lots to digest and consume but my first impressions are very positive. It had great flow for something that had a lot of space to work around. Like a boomerang of sound sometimes. Loved the loops and the beat drops. Really enjoyable. 8/10 |
