The Storyteller - A Musical Tribute to Yusef Lateef by The Nat Birchall Quartet https://natbirchalljazzman.bandcamp....o-yusef-lateef Probably the best modal jazz release of the year.

Views from Sixteen Stories by Alaskan Tapes https://alaskantapes.bandcamp.com/al...ixteen-stories There’s a lot of stiff competition but these guys are still standouts in the ambient neoclassical scene.

Dreamstruck by Harvey Sorgen, Joe Fonda, and Marilyn Crispell Every recording Marilyn Crispell is on is probably a top ten jazz release from that year. It’s hard to believe she’s in her 70’s now. I know she gets a lot of respect but she deserves a hell of a lot more.

IN DEMONS IN! by Jim O'Rourke & CM von Hausswolff
https://idealrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/in-demons-in and that link links to several more 2019 recordings that are all probably very good to great Idgaf how much listening you do. This year and the amount of music available on Spotify and bandcamp is an insurmountable mountain. We can make our lists of what we’ve heard but it’s impossible to really know. It goes to show if you give an easily accessible platform to everybody the amount of people with something powerful and beautiful to express and the talent to do it there a lot of very talented creative people out there. More than we’ll ever hear in this short life.

Bandcamp has honestly been the best thing about the modern music era.

And then the vaporwave related stuff - bandcamp is the place to be to find cutting edge music that’s pioneering new ground. And music made purely as a creative expression with really no commercial intentions. Plus on bandcamp you can follow labels and it gives meaning to labels as a form of curation in the digital age. It’s the ability to organize what you listen to that sends me back to Spotify though.

Terror Management & Hiding Places
Right now I’m thinking Billy Woods is the heavyweight hip hop champion of 2019. Still things I haven’t heard (like the new earl) and will have to relisten to other stuff but his rap style is so confident masculine and complete and his content is fully potent. Unassailable

Horixens by Sevish https://sevish.bandcamp.com/album/horixens He doesn’t put a vapor anything tag on his bandcamp but I still think it fits in broader interpretation of that movement. There’s a lot going on here musically but it also gels and grooves. An experimental composer who refreshingly embraces the “it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing” philosophy. Highly recommended
