The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust... is without a doubt my favourite Bowie album. Every songs gets 5* apart from maybe "It Ain't Easy", and Bowie didn't even write that one. Hunky Dory is a close second, because "Quicksand" alone is genius. Long live Mr. Bowie

I hope someone hasn't already posted this, if so sorry for the re-post.
Interesting to me is Bowie's understanding of the Occult and how he manages to weave it into his compositions, a great article addressing this can be found here . . . David Bowie and the Occult - The Laughing Gnostic |

The occult has been associated with rock/metal for decades. The most famous that comes to mind right away is when Ozzy Osbourne (supposedly) bought a castle that was formally owned by satanist Alister Crowley. I'm not quite certain if it is fact or just an urban legend? (Who cares)..it was used as a gimmick in order to sale popularity by Osbourne. The 2nd. instance is when Judas Priest was drawn into court regarding, their music was sending subliminal messages through their lyrics and music, which caused two individuals to commit suicide. Geesh. The occult and rock music! |

Not everyone in the music biz uses the occult as a gimmick, a few are real practitioners. |

It was the song "Better By You, Better By Me" from their Stained Class album, but the whole thing becomes more interesting because that song is just a cover version. It was originally done by Spooky Tooth from their Spooky Two album and that album is hardly the stuff of subliminal messages. I even remember bands like Styx were accused of subliminal messages as well. The 1970s were certainly the era of witch hunts in music.

Just listened to Low. I'll put a full review in my journal later but I just want to say that Brian Eno proves his greatness once again with this album.
