I think it's only underrated because those amateurs at allmusic gave it 5/10. Really can't fathom why myself, especially when it has songs like this on it;

The title track, Time Will Crawl and 87 & Cry are great songs. Otherwise I keep changing my mind about about the rest of it. It only ever appeals to me when I'm in the mood for some overblown, cheesy 80s stadium rock, which is far from a phrase I'd associate with Bowie's strengths as a performer.

My favourite Bowie album: Ziggy. Not very original I know, but it's still damn good!

Don't crucify me for saying this, but... I have never actually listened to a David Bowie album. So... does anyone know of a decent release by him that's a bit experimental?

I'm not really a fan of glam rock, but then again I don't tend to shy away from it either. I enjoy listening to bands such as Roxy Music and Doctors of Madness. So... just pick an album you feel that's right.

You`ve listened to all this obscure 1960s stuff and never a Bowie album....I don`t believe you

Anyway large chucks of his discography are experimental, but the phase to start with is his early 1970s glam era phase and the three albums that define this are:

Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust...., Aladdin Sane.

Or the late 1970s electronica phase (Berlin trilogy)

Low, Heroes, Lodger

If I had to name the 30 greatest albums of all time, both Ziggy Stardust and especially Low would easily make that list

Hunky Dory isn't really experimental...it might kinda border on being a bit differnt but the songs are fairly conventional but conventional and v.inspired. Easilly one of the top 10 best albums I've ever heard. Low and Heroes are the 2 really experimental ones. Heroes has some good songs on it and of course the title track is great but it just leaves me a bit cold. It's supposed to be more, and deliberately so, upbeat than Low but I just find Low a nicer sound...production wise. I wouldn't bother with Aladin Sane if you're only a casual fan. Diamond dogs is much better. Young American's is great but it's a bit smoochy and I don't like smoochy music. Stn. to stn. is **** imo. The title tracks o.k but apart from that I just don't like it at all...really mediocre songs. His biggest turky to most people is Never let me down but it's actually got some brilliant songs on it. Tonight is his real turkey. Apart from Loving the alien it is absoulbtely ****e. Let's dance isn't worth getting either apart from for a few songs.
Basically if you're not a hardcore fan just get HUnky Dory, Ziggy & Low. You can't go wrong with them.
