The Official David Bowie Thread (single, albums, iggy pop, Berlin)

I was strictly talking about talent from the standpoint of playing instruments and nothing else. I certainly appreciate the point that Dream Theater are insanely good musicians, though I also hate the music. I also recognize that say, Danny Carey from Tool is an extremely innovative and talented drummer, though I don't really like the music.

Finally, someone that sees it too. I am a big Tool fan and I've tried to show people his skills. They just go, "Who the **** is Danny Carey? I hate prog." He actually studied with a tabla master from India to try to get better control over his hands. And his solo on Right in Two is absolutely amazing.

What I think is most interesting about David Bowie is his many-varied styles. He was never a static singer, and he was a great showman (never like Iggy Pop though...ugh). I think hes written and produced some of the best albums (Ziggy, Heroes, Alladin Sane...) and in them hes completely different.

I've been listening to Bowie's early stuff. The first album is obviously shit. Space Oddity is an improvement but is still a messy scattered state of affairs.

It starts getting REALLY good with The Man Who Sold The World (1970). This is a fantastic album, one of Bowie's best. It may not be particularly innovative, but what it is is distinctive. The music has a certain weird, eerie oddness to it that is so idiosyncratically David Bowie. Virtually all the songs on the album are quality album tracks, not least the title track itself (which Nirvana covered on MTV in 93). Who else has heard the greatness of this album?

I do like it yes, as far as is glam rock period goes it's a really good consistent collection. Can't go wrong with Width of a Circle, beautiful song.

I've been listening to his early albums lately and I have to say that everything up to Ziggy stardust bored me (apart from the song The man who sold the world). I'll continue to explore his discography but I'm not very hopeful. :\

Everything after Aladdin Sane just bores me, and you guys will probably flame me for this but, I hate that whole Berlin era, the only good stuff to come of that for me was the stuff he did with Iggy Pop.

We're on the same page, buddy. Just about. I actually liked the whole of The Man Who Sold The World, because the music sounds odd, brooding, ominous - like there's something wrong with it that needs to be fixed. I feel that quality makes it one of Bowie's best records. However, I am currently listening to Hunky Dory, and aside from the hits on it, does the whole thing not like totally blow? I mean, in whose definition does this constitute anything aside from pointless, wasteful trollope?

Space Oddity also sucks aside from 2 (maybe 3) songs and as for Bowie's first album, well...I don't think even the staunchest Bowiephiles would try to justify its existence. Early David Bowie seems to be all about the singles. I am increasingly convinced of that. I am starting to understand for the first time why Ethan has referred to him as David Blowme.

I'm getting the impression you hate things just because they're good. Space Oddity may not have been too good, but at least it got Bowie into the world. And, well...
