Ten Year Anniversary of Kurt's Death

Wow, ten years ago, Kurt killed himself and his body wasn't found until 4-8-94. Where were you in '94 and what was your reaction?I was a senior in Highschool and I was shocked. I turned on WFNX and listened to Nirvana A-Z. I was a little sad and angry. They were a good band, but not the greatest band on the planet that so many make them out to be. Don't get me wrong I love Nirvana, but I'm sick of all these posers;who make Nirvana, the end all, be all band of the '90s.

well... i was 6 years old and i didn't have a clue-i would think. soo yea i don't remember where i was. probably sleeping, eating, or playing. :p:
i did start getting into Nirvana when i was like 10 maybe becuz my cousin would always listen to them and he was a lot older than me.
i agree that they were a good band, but not the greatest band on the planet.

IamAlejo 04-05-2004 01:11 PM

i love em. horrible to see that happen, but they did get the whole grundge thing going. maybe a good thing, since it seems it did fade out kinda quick.

I was too little to give a **** at the time, but I do like their music.

DJ_Jester 04-05-2004 05:40 PM

I was a Sophomore in high school at the time. Man I remember how my band used to play a lot of Nirvana songs. Hell the name of the band was Euphoria. It really crushed my friend when he heard the news.

Anyway, I dunno if this will be interesting to anyone else but I found this article today.

I read something all about that today...things actually do look pretty sketchy. Im amazed the authorities let all this slip.

JackJeckel 04-05-2004 11:00 PM

I was only 7 but I was already listening to Nirvana... man I was sad when I heard Kurt died, I didn't really htink about it much until today though... that really affected my whole perspective on music, hell, life in general.. RIP Kurt

Nirvana didnt "get grunge going" they merely brough it to a wider audience, grunge was a purely Seattle thing until Nirvana became heard of, but they didn't create it, not by a long shot. Nine Inch Nails were the first grunge band to release an album, even though THAT album wasnt grunge. Grunge didnt magically appear when Nirvana came on the scene.

It sad, and I think its a cop-out.. from a man who had so much to offer the musical world to just end things like that, but I mean when you look at the guys life, its not very suprising...

His parents abandoned him at a young age, he grew up alone and confused. He lived in Seattle with the American city with the most depressing rainy days. His band was brought into the spotlight so suddenly that he was not equipped to handle the instant fame. He thought he had to live the rock-star life, to go along with the position, which meant drugs and lots of them.

I love Nirvana though, they influence they had on new music is astounding. I was *counts* 5 years old when it happened so I dont really remember but just like someone mentioned earlier, my cousin and uncle were really into Nirvana, so I learned alot about them at a young age.

what's a cop-out? him killing himself (if he did)?

Eltiraaz 04-09-2004 08:26 AM

yeah.. supposing he did kill himself, then thats the cop out i was talking about.

ROCK ON NIRVANA

o fo sho

how is killing yourself a cop out? it really pisses me off hearing people saying that suicide is a "cop out" or a "pussy's way out" or **** like that. I lost a very good friend of mine to suicide, and another friend attempted, but is luckily still alive. let me tell you, if you've never been at that place in your life yourself, you have absolutely no right to pass any judgement on them for their actions. at that point, you're not able to think, all you want is for the pain to end. you're so consumed by it that logical reasoning fly's out the window. you can't even recognize all the love and support surounding you if you only asked.

Eltiraaz 04-12-2004 07:37 AM

What I'm saying is, he cheated himself and the world out of his talent by ending things that way.. plus he just wasnt sane, i mean when your on those kinda drugs, you cant honestly tell me that it was a rational desicion.

jibber 04-13-2004 08:02 PM

ok, misunderstood u'r post a bit. u'r right, he was so out of it he wouldn't have known what he was doing. i was talking to some people about this, one guy wondered if his music would have been as good without the drugs. sort of an interesting question, just made me think about the extent to which drugs consumed him.

DismembermentPlan 04-14-2004 12:26 AM

Although I was real young at the time Nirvana made it big, I do remember how much the band meant to my old brother and his mates, and now I'm at that age myself, the music suddenly makes a lot of sense to me now. I think they were great at the time and for many people they really hit deep.

JackJeckel 04-15-2004 11:38 AM

eltiraaz, i think you have a very childish view of this whole situation, especially in relation to kurdt's abuse of heroine etc

please read "heavier than heaven" by charles r. cross and i think you'll gain a lot more insight on kurdt's whole life

gregb 05-10-2004 05:11 PM

overrated

Eltiraaz 05-11-2004 01:55 PM

I've seen the DVD. I know about Kurts life.. I know his parents abandoned him and left him with his grandparents.. i know that he lived a very ****ty life.

I still dont think that killing yourself is ever the right way out of a situation. I'm sure if he hadnt things would have worked out at least a little better. Of course music wouldnt have been the same if he hadnt. Im sorry if you disagree but the only reason Nirvana is so MEGA popular is because Kurt Cobain commited suicide. If they would have continued to make records people would have eventually let nirvana fade into mediocrity and their music wouldnt be taken SO seriously.

im done talking about this

thisguitar 05-14-2004 10:26 AM

I was 6/7 when kurt died

Sick of people going on about how he was murdered.
Also he wasn't the only member of nirvana that mattered, I hate it when people just love the guy when in reality he ****ed up nirvana.

noelmanager 05-21-2004 04:33 PM

I was 14

I was 14 when Kurt Killed himself..I was shocked to hear it, I was at school when I found out. My artist Mi'Chel was about the same age...she told me she didnt talk for like two weeks...after she found out. Kurt was her main influence,he pritty much taught her unknowingly everything she knows when it comes to the guitar. She learned every song of his by ear, never had a lesson, just picked it up. I think Nirvana was an excellant band, I still listen to there stuff at least once a week..and as for Mi'Chel, I believe I hear her refer to them once a day...really...Kurt was her Idol, in away..she had a painful childhood, and Kurt helped her through the pain...music does that for alot of people. Anyway..I can honestly say they paved the way for alot of artists, and are missed greatly...on my part and my artists part. www.mymichel.com

Nirvana were a great band, not the best on the planet, not even the best out of that group of Seattle bands (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains all better for me) but the deification of Cobain since his death has been more depressing than his decision to end his life prematurely.

It shocks me when people call him the greatest singer and guitarist ever. He wasn't. He wasn't the greatest songwriter ever. He was a talented man with a heart for the music he and his band created, but I agree with Elitraaz, his drug addiction was destroying Nirvana. They were cancelling shows, disappointing fans all around the world, and Kurt had plenty of chances to rehabilitate himself, and he chose not to.

He left behind a child as well, and that to me is pretty much unforgivable behaviour, however depressed he felt, he has abandoned that child in the exact same way as his parents' abandoned him. As someone who's father abandoned him at an early age, I cannot even begin to comprehend how Cobain could do such a thing.

IamAlejo 08-14-2004 03:37 PM

Really old thread, but Nirvana was a great band, especially for that time. They were more "influential" on those times than they were "the best band".
