Good Songs from Bad Albums
Ever find a banger track or two on an album you dislike? Give some examples!
I'll start off with an old enemy of mine: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...alcutcover.jpg Hate this thing. Waters' self-pitying wankery from front to back. That being said- I like Not Now John. I've always had a fancy for harder-edged Floyd tracks and, even though the backup singers are a bit irritating, I still giggled like a schoolgirl the first time I heard "**** ALL THAT". Stupid but okay song. |
There's probably several examples, but since I've been listening to electronic music lately the first two to come to mind are these:
4x4=12 is the only mediocre album in deadmau5's discography imo, but this song is so damn good. Makes sense that it was originally from the Everything is Complicated EP in 2006. lol I know both of us are going to agree with this one. Disc 2 of The Altogether is a masterpiece, but disc one is mostly mediocre. Meltdown on the other hand, this song is one of Orbital's absolute best. I love all the creative uses of different sounds as beats. |
You chose the wrong Floyd record.

I could post a ton of songs here probably, but this one comes to mind right now:
Alice in chains - Private Hell - from Black Gives Way to Blue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n57guzLtQmc The only song I'll bother with from this album. |

I think I've mentioned this on MB before, but I love this song. The album, however, is complete garbage. None of the melancholy atmosphere of this song. None of the quirkiness or catchiness. Nothing but plodding barroom rawk. |

I love The Final Cut, but "Not Now John" is my least favorite song on the album.

Never agree with me about anything ever again. Now I have to go bathe.

Here's a metal example:
The biggest problem with Risk is not that they left thrash, the problem is that it didn't have enough insanely catchy jams like this song. |

It's not even that it's an overtly bad album, it's just that it passes by without leaving much of an impression beyond "Welp, that was an album." But there are like three or four songs on it that've grown on me, maybe partly because The Line, The Cross, And The Curve was so adorable. |

I mean, 50 Words For Snow was way colder, and not just figuratively :thumb:
The song where she ****s a snowman > |
But it sounds warmer. Hard to explain. I really like 50 Words for Snow. Very good album. It's only The Red Shoes and Aerial that don't really speak to me.
|
Been awhile since I threw Aerial on
Maybe I'll do that today, see if my feelings about it have changed |
I don't think I've heard it in a least a small handful years. Used to not really hold my attention, but I used to be more challenged in that regard, so that could have changed. It's not like 50 Words for Snow is a super hooky tour de force.

Overall I thought the new Idles album was dull as sin but I horoughly enjoyed Colossus, more for the vocal work than anything else (the instrumentation is pretty flat imo).
|
Really unpopular opinion here, but I've never been a fan of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. I think it's the weakest of the original Ozzy-era albums (and that's including Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die). Even after giving it another shot, I still don't get why everyone loves it so much. I can hear some good ideas throughout, but it just feels like those moments are sparse.
With that said though, Killing Yourself to Live is great: |
thought this year's release from sophie was mostly trash but ooh boy that opener
would love to hear more of this instead of the grating pseudo club music |
