But to actually answer the OP's question, I've found a few lists on RYM that outline some cool music that's for free.

Here's a few good free live performances from various bands on the Internet archive.
Free albums.
More free albums.
Here you can find every list that is under the RYM list category "Free and Legal" to check them out for yourself.
