Modes

I still don't quite understand modes. I can create modes all day long, but I don't get how, say, C D Eb F G A Bb isn't a C scale in Bb Major, not a C Dorian mode.

Help?

:shycouch:

Yes, C Dorian is a mode of Bb Major. Is there a contradiction there?

I guess I don't understand how modes are used, or how to talk about them in regard to the terminology.

Modes are basically just scales that have their own tonal flavor because of how the scale steps deviate from "regular" major or minor. I heard you like Adam Neely. He has a pretty informative video that discusses modes:

12tone has one on modes too but it goes a little more basic with it

Thank you. I watched the Adam Neely lesson and found it helpful, especially when he talked about how one practically applies musical knowledge. The second video was a little chaotic and fast-paced for me.

I think what I've gleaned so far from looking at modes is that modes allow for a certain mood within a scale.

Yeah, 12tone tends to keep a pretty high speech tempo. Some of his stuff is best watched with the playback speed at 0.5

I'm glad you gained something from the Adam Neely vid. I'd say your summary of modes is pretty accurate.
