Accusing people of not being genuine about their music taste (i.e. "just listening to it to feel cool") is hella insecure.

I haven't ever met a person that actually seemed to fit that idea of hipsterdom. Yet, you see this idea pop up all the time. The amount of times I've seen people accusing others of just liking something because it's cool/makes them seem clever is considerable. Possibly even on MB? Not that I can name examples. It just seems to me that the idea of the hipster mentality is alive and well, even if it's hard to find an actual hipster of this sort. |

That's what a stereotype is, though. An exaggerated, unrepresentative example of some group of people or another. I'm not surprised you can't find a prototypical hipster, but you can definitely find examples of behaviour we attribute to hipsters.

I think a lot of music that tires to be clever/smart is less so than it comes of as trying to be so. Knowwhati'msayin?
But it's all in the eye (ear) of the beholder. I just personally think that music that goes for edge tends to come off as try hard and self conscious. Sincerity needs a comeback. It's unfairly being equated with overblown tripe like Celine Dion/similar styles of delivery. |
